I got my new horse from Malvern Sales last Tuesday. Let me explain that you do not get to see the passport until AFTER you have paid for the horse.

The catalogue listing said 16.2 sire King of Diamonds. Now to be honest I too thought he was IDx but Diamond lines (as KOD died)

After paying for him I notice the Passport says breeding unverified but does say he is 5 years old, sire King of Diamonds TB Dam Channel, and his mircochip number, which vet proved was correct. As he passed the vetting and was quiet enough I wasn't too fussy that he wasn't IDx.

When I got home I noticed that his passport was only issued in June this year which got me thinking as he was microchipped I wondered if Weatherby's had him on record. So I emailed them, low and behold I got a reply saying YES they had been notified in 2003

Grand Jour (IRE) was foaled in Ireland in 2003 by Grand Lodge (USA) out of Reveuse de Jour (IRE) bred by Islanmore Stud

So he is 6 not 5 (luckily only a year out) has raced, won 3 races too

I am quite happy with the results but it could have been awful, ie stolen or age way out.

Also means I can do ROR which I'm chuffed about

I'm glad you're still pleased with your horse - but I am just wondering if you have any comeback to the sales room as he is not what they said he was and it didn't take much investigation by you to find out the truth?

I've no idea. What I do know is that I paid over the odds for what he is, based on what I thought he was. Lets hope he is worth it in the end lol

Wow, well that must have been a surprise! he must be pretty good looking if he was a £50k foal!
He comes from quite a smart family/dam-line as well!

Awful tho that he was given a completly fake passport :-(

You should DEFINITELY take this up with the auction company as it is quite horrifying how they could have got it so wrong. Can you be absolutely sure which horse you have got. I would now want it independently verified if I were you.

Makes you really wonder about passports

I have emailed Brightwells.

How did you find out how much he was sold for as a foal? I looked under sales on the racing post but not there, however it says he was sold in 02 well not born till 03 lol

I have to send copy of current passport and a identification/microchipping confirmation to Weatherby's to get correct passport

Trust this to happen to me!! I know I always seem to end up with 'odd' or unusual horses but this takes the biscuit

Thanks

Oh yes btw he is a pretty lad. Strange too that I told everyone he looks very much like the one I wanted that failed the vetting. ha she was by Sadlers Wells, his Grand sire

He will quite possibly have been previously sold by Brightwells at the Ascot bloodstock sales. If he did sell there, then you have a good claim to be refunded the difference between what he sold for there and what you paid for him. Ex racers are fetching £500 at Doncaster bloodstock auctions, if they sell at all.

A friend of mine bought an Irish sportshorse (which I said to her looked like an Irish TB) from a small scale dealer. When it had its flu & tet done, her vet scanned it, found a microchip and it was an English racehorse that had gone through Ascot sales 6 months previously. She was quite happy with the horse so didn't do anything about it - only slightly cross that we had been at the Ascot sales and could have bought it there and then for about £1,000 less! Keep us posted with what you find out.

Reminds me of someone who bought a mare from a dealer, asked if she had papers and who she was out of - the dealer replied, who do you want her to be out of???

I rest my case!

Quite frankly, i would be livid....

There is a big difference in value to an ex racer to one of proven King of Diamonds line.

Its like buying a potential showjumper, then finding out its father was a donkey.

great news that you are still happy with your horse BUT the auction house doesn't know that and neither does the vendor...so i;d be trying to get the difference refunded - its worth a shot
