Hi all, having retired my last one with your guys very helpful advice, I’m now having issues with my new one and I’m absolutely devastated 😭
He came in lame yesterday afternoon, probably 4/10 - 5/10 on his right hind 😭
My farrier is coming tomorrow anyway but it doesn’t seem like an abscess.
I had the vet today as someone else was having them anyway, he has a slightly more puffy right hind although he has windgalls on both hind legs anyway so it’s difficult to see the difference, anyway he wasn’t very helpful tbh, he’s advised to rest him for a week with low dose bute and then see what he’s like. Im scared he’s done something to his manica or annular ligament as that’s where the swelling is. I’ve been through this process so many times and i’ve only had him 2 months, how do you guys stay positive??? 😢😢

Oh bless him xx could be absolutely anything ground is so wet too xx does he share a field with others ? Xx if your not happy get your own vet to
Come out just to put your mind at ease xx was he vetted when you bought him xx

I stay positive because I have one that is both a numpty in the field and a wimp!
He comes in more often than I'd like convinced he's dying, only to be right as rain the next day.

Easier said than done I know, but its far to early to be worrying yet, especially as he's new and you're still getting to know him 🙂

It could still be early days for an abscess, or just a tweak that's a bit sore.
Leave him be for a few days with some big deep breaths for you and bute if you think he needs, just remember it will mask things so maybe wait till after farrier has had the hoof testers on it etc

He does share a field and I have seen him be a little bit of a numpty sometimes to be honest lol. he was 5 stage vetted and passed when I bought him.

Thank you, I find I just resort of panicking now because of my last one was always lame and was always the worst outcome! Fingers crossed for a little tweak and a sound horse by next week!! 🤞

Don't worry I have to talk myself down every time mine does it too!
And once you've been through it with one, it's hard not to think of the most doom laden possibilities.

Caring is good, worrying before you need to is hard work!
Fingers crossed for you here too 🤞🥰

Try not to worry or look for problems…just treat what is apparent and take things in stages. Last year ..one week into ownership the youngster fell on her knees skinning them and was a bit lame..but no lasting damage. Then cut above her coronet..no lasting damage…stuff happens. My mare is slightly lame..she’s on a bit of Bute and off games for another month. I’m not torturing myself with the what if s… The vet and I will decide what the next step is if she’s still lame in 4 weeks time.

Unfortunately he is not much better, they think stifle and he is heading into the hospital next week :( devastated is an understatement. I am sure it will be manageable but it is heartbreaking to have to go through it all again after such an awful time with my last one. even the vet said what bad luck I have… that’s when you know it’s bad!

Thank you for the update and I’m sorry to hear he’s not improved. I hope with some time and treatment he can come back sound.
This time last year I was worried sick about my boy, his lameness had come on over the course of about 6 weeks and no cause had been found. The night before he was booked in for an MRI he was close to being non weight bearing. I didn’t dare think what the MRI might find. I was expecting the worst.
The MRI findings weren’t that bad, it just seems my boy is a princess!
It took a few months but he was back comfortably in full work in May.
I hope your boy can turn around too.

Good luck! Mine is in tomorrow morning, i’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of it as they always have done with my others. I think I have ptsd from the waiting room at Rossdales… lol
Hope for a good outcome and @Midlifecrisis ..

What a time of it your both having ☹️🫶🏻

Just thought id do an update, he ended up needing the op, all went well! its now 5 months post injury and 3 1/2 post op. He is still walking but has been allowed out in a pen this week! He has been the best patient on box rest, and although extremely fresh to ride, he is not dangerous, it was very daunting getting back on a horse that you've only known a short time and who is on box rest. we are hoping to start trotting in 2 weeks!

That is such gutting news. So sorry to read this. What is the plan going forward now?
no surgery as his confirmation gives him a much reduced prognosis (i’m unsure on the ethics of it too) and I also am not putting him through another one. we’ve shortened his rehab and he’s having prp, shockwave and steroids to try and get on top of it but his prognosis isn’t great so i’m hoping that he’ll be a light hack at least, not sure what the future holds for me as I can’t afford another one let alone go through any of this again so it feels like my riding career is over for a little while. x

I am so sorry. Horses can absolutely break our hearts can't they x

You have my utmost sympathy, coblet had surgery on his annular ligaments (both hinds) 12 months ago and was also a model pupil on on box test, then solo small paddock turnout etc we did the twice daily inhand walking increasing from 5 mins to 30 mins and then I did manage to get back on hacking, at walk he was fine, and we introduced trot and canter but he went lame again and was very uncomfortable, it was 1 step forward and 2 back, and totally took over my life for 10 months so as he was 17 we took the decision to retire him at Xmas. We still have him on grass livery turned away but he’s struggling even in the field on bute so he won’t be long now :(
We can’t afford to keep 2 either so luckily have been riding a friends a few times a week but are tentatively starting to look.

I already have 3 lol. my 21 year old who has been retired for 5 years, my 17 year old who has been retired for about a year, and my now 11 year old who was supposed to be my dressage pony to take me up the levels, I spent all my savings on him 😢
