I've just got a new horse, who is quite nice, apart from it is really fat and I think it might have laminitis. I'll probably get the vet out to have a look, but I'm a bit annoyed as the dealer obviously sold me the horse knowing that it had this problem.

I have such bad luck buying horses
 
Laminitis is not a disease nor a problem - correctly managed, it can be prevented. Get your vet out immediatly, laminitis can kill. Make up for the dealers mistakes

I think i'll try to send him back, he's also a bit bad to handle, I've been doing some NH techniques with him but it is slow progress
 
Did you get it vetted? Vet should have picked up on this. God I am so sick of people who do not get vettings when buying horses.
 
You don't have a choice here. you are the owner, therefore you have responsibilities. If you are not suffiently experieinced to diagnose and treat the problem yourself with complete certainty then you must call a vet, cost doesn't come into it.

You will need that professional opinion to return the horse to the dealer in any case, as they may well be difficult. Did you have the horse vetted?

Just read this new post, how long have you had this horse/pony? Laminitus can pop up in less than 24 hours if an overweight horse is not getting enough exercise and too much food, and NH techniques rarely equal exercise. You can't blame the vendor for this if you have had it a while
 
It was sorted vetted?! what the F does that mean?

and what on earth is NH going to do to help laminitis?!

Good question about the shoes Weezy. The thought had occured!
 
so you bought a horse that wouldnt let the vet vet it?? I therefore assume you bought it on the 'cheap' because of this?

In which case you should spend the extra money on getting a vet out to the poor thing.


Is this a wind up btw???
 
I am going to be very blunt and you are not going to like it but here goes.

Reading this post, and you other spavin post it seems clear to me that you are working on a very small budget as financial considerations are uppermost in your mind. It also appears that you have little expereince in looking after horses.

Do yourself and the horses a favour, get the vet and get it sorted, then reconsider whether you are really in a position to be keeping horses without a wider support network
 
I paid £3k for him, is that a small budget? I'm sorry if I can't afford the £10k horse you obviously have.

I did try to get it vetted - especially after the spavin fiasco, but he was just a nightmare, I think he might have been beaten by a man in the past. To be fair the vet did do very well to get his markings and scan his microchip and they trotted him up and down, but couldn't do the flexion test
