Hi, question from a friend whos not on here,

Shes just bought a new horse and it needs worming, now ive heard horror stories from the equest pramox, so wanted to know if theres anything 'milder'?

Cheers

How about Panacur 5 day wormer?
A worm count would be a good idea but won't show tapes- if I had a new horse I'd be worming them for tapeworm as a matter of course anyway.
Equest Pramox can be quite harsh but I think it's more reactions than side effects and generally if your horse has had it before with no ill effects and has been ok this time I'd not worry about it.
Mine have Pramox with no problem

Oh no, I have just wormed by with Equest pramox as supplied by the vet - does it have side effects? He has had it before and was OK.

Well I think you'll be okay if you've had it before I just saw on here if you google equest pramox side effect some of them have come down with colic, so think its better to use something less strong for a horse with no worming history?? (I think)

well he was still looking bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning although he did clamp his jaw shut last night when he say me approaching with the wormer :D. I will google it though as I am generally not a fan of harsh chemicals - I just trusted to the equine vets to know best which might have been foolish! thanks :)

It can cause colic like symptoms, within a short time of being administered. They recover just as fast though.

OP suggest that you use a broad spectrum wormer, one that contains Ivomec & Praziquontal. When I get a new horse I usually bomb drench, that is worm weekly for three weeks.

I no longer trust other peoples worming program's, or their honesty in saying they've wormed regularly.

Id worm count before turning the horse out - and as of last month, will be taking advantage of a new owner - managed test for tape. Google Equisal - looks very interesting!

The new tapeworm test is already causing great interest. We sell it at Westgate Labs and think it is a very exciting development. I am already using it with my own horses and the results are very interesting so far, but confidential as we are on a trial. Have a look here for more info and discussion http://on.fb.me/1pumnsM

I saw you were selling it. Corrine wrote an article for my magazine, and it's a great read. I'll definitely be using the test.

I got a new pony a few months ago and I asked the vets advice on what to do about worming him on arrival. I usually worm count mine and do Equest Pramox in December. Vet said give him Equest Pramox to clear him out and then you've got a clean sheet to start your worm count programme. Pony was fine on EP, as are all my other horses I've ever given it to :-)
