Hi everyone!

Well i think i may have found my dream horse, and if everything goes well i will be buying him in the next few weeks. (not isclosing too much incase it all goes wrong lol!)

He will be my first owned horse and im so nervous!
Im scared something will go wrong, he may hurt himself, he might have problems i dont know how to deal with etc.
Im also nervous about dealing with things ive never had to before, like massive vets bills, insurance etc!

I know im being stupid and i am quite experienced with horses, i have loaned previously for years but this will be the first time ive had noone to fall back on to help me and im on my own

Did anyone else feel nervous when buying their first horse? Did it all work out okay?

HI there, Im afraid it was so long ago I was a mere babe- but I wish you luck, and that all goes smoothly.

I know, Its always worrying, but often brilliant and exciting, Ill keep my fingers crossed and we await photos asap!!!!

I felt nervous last month buying my fifth horse, lol. So you're definately not alone.
The time I've found the hardest was when I had my horse at home. I feel much more confident when I have my horse at a yard with experienced people around to help when/if I need it... whether I need help with something small like getting on when he won't stand still, to watching him trot up, to a second opinion when I'm over reacting to a minor ailment, lol. Which I'm sure all Mummy's tend to do with their ponies.
I just find it comforting to have a little support around me. Do you have people you can turn to on your yard? Or even friends that aren't at the yard but will be good for advice on the end of the phone?

You are not alone, I always feel like that buying a new horse. All you can do is put in place all the sensible precautions, continue getting lessons and always ask for help if you are stuck and there is not much more you can do than that. Deep breath, get him vetted and if it all goes wel - enjoy!!!

You'll be alright hun

. Even the most experienced are learning all the time, it's one of the great things about this great love

Just write out your budget as best you can; no doubt you'll already have the numbers of equine vet/farrier/dentist/saddler/back persons; sniff out the best feed merchants and have back ups in mind should your usual one run out; shop round for insurance, remember that the cheapest is not always the best (and one tends to find out the hard way

); check over your horsey first aid kit.

Oh I don't 'alf go on at times

. Like Mik says, piccies a soon as you can

I bought my first horse 2 years ago after waiting 30yrs for one!! I didn't even loan one beforehand, just shared a friends for a few months. When I found George I knew deep down that he was right but I was terrified I'd done the wrong thing, that he was too big for me, that I wouldn't know what to do in an emergency, that I wouldn't cope etc etc. We've had our ups and downs, but it turns out I bought an absolute gem, and with the support from friends at the yard and peeps on here it seems I am coping ok! I do ask a lot of numpty questions but hey ho better to ask.

All the best, I'm sure it will all be fine and you will be thrilled when your new horse arrives..............I know I was:

Budget is worked out, but tight for the first month or so after the initial purchase/vetting/transport but after that we should be fine!
I have found a nice yard, seems friendly and helpful and hopefully we will all get along! I have all equipment, although im sure ill find something i need after a few days.
With insurance, is there any way to be covered for all vets fees, im not familiar with horsey insurance (only i know how difficult insurance can be)

When you bring a new horse home what do you guys tend to do first, just turn it straight out or stable it for abit? The horse i might be buying lives out 24/7 due to his weaving when stabled, therfore i dont know whether it would be best to just start with the routine from the off, thoughts?

Thanks for the support everyone, im just having abit of a panic windering if im doing the right thing or not! But i suppose its now or never and i must take the plunge at some point!

Lol, you'll always 'need' something, even if you need it or not

Just ask my hubby lol

Check with your yard regarding what to do when ned first comes home. Some places will want them in for the first day, some say put straight out. It will also depend on the other horses (owners might want to be around, or turn out in a certain order).

Insurance: call all the reputable ones and get quotes, just make sure of the level of vet cover etc.

If new ned weaves, YO might want a grill putting up as some people think it's catching (which is a load of rowlocks, but nowt so queer as folk

). The grill might not stop the weaving, if ned is that way inclined he'll do it at some other point in his stable.

You're bound to feel a bit excited and nervous and jittery, and quite often it will be all at once

I wasn't nervous when I bought my first pony way back when - I'm more nervous now about the new fella cos I know the pitfalls!! I'm having to keep reassuring myself about things, otherwise I'll end up not going to the yard tomorrow to pay for and take proper ownership of him!

Well he is perfect in all ways except the weaving, he dosent weave at any point in the field, only when stabled purely for attention, because as soon as someone speaks to him he stops. Im hoping as he is out 24/7 the yard wont have a major problem with it, but im happy for grills etc to be put up if needs be.

He is the opposite of what i wanted, but i just have a feeling he is the one, i cant explain it but despite my circumstances not being 100% for a horse i couldnt pass up this oppertunity, which is proberbly why im having second thoughts! I will update you all on him if i do decide to get him, its not finalised yet and i dont want to jinx it!

At least i have everyone on here for support too which is great.

Hugs hunny, hope it goes well

P.S. My ned weaves from excitement and when she sees me and thinks I should be doing something with her, but only when she is stabled. It's just the way she is and does not detract in any way at all

Will wobble off and await the update

totally normal. It would be worrying if you weren't scared!! I brought my first horse in 2007 after loaning for years and its been a very very steep learning curve. But theres always plenty of people around to help or ask advice so don't worry. You can always ask here!!!

Best of luck with it. I'm certain you'll love having your own 'baby' and will have many many years of fun, worry, tears and yet more worry (its fun being a mum!)

BUT nothing can beat that feeling when you go to the yard and see your very own horse trotting over to you or even just standing there looking gorgeous
