Hi, I've just purchased a rising 4 cob, he's a blank canvas, he was kept on a caravan park with a couple of minis and has done nothing. I've had to turn him out with the herd and he doesn't know what to do with himself , do they generally settle pretty quickly? It's horrible seeing him so upset. Thanks in advance.

Our yard owner has a few cobs in every couple of months to bring on and sell, they're chucked out in our big herd and often look rather lost for a week or two but soon settle and are accepted into the group.

My pony came to us from a rather quiet herd and then went out with our 3 who were pretty quiet, apart from at feed time when the pecking order came into play. A few year later we moved yard and he's out in a big herd with all geldings. He is very very play full and comes in with cuts and scrapes all the time! When we first moved we were being knocked down in the show ring for having UN even hair. But now it's all playful, just whilst they sort out the pecking order will there be bother, then it will all just turn to play

Worst I've seen is 6 weeks - that was a difficult mare who just couldn't find a place in the herd and trailed behind looking lost. She lost a bit of weight but was otherwise fine. Then one day I came down and she was in the middle of it and you'd think she'd been there forever ... Generally 1-2 weeks and they're settled and happy :)

He may not be fine we have a new cob joined us and so far it has caused 2 vet bills as it is the kicker. The situation has been dealt with now but it has caused much friction and loss of friends. I would ask if you could give him a little area to himself while he settles in.
