new horse questions!!

its been ages and ages since i've had a new horse. was planning to turn him out as soon as he arrives into his temp paddock next to his chums. was planning to get him in every day and groom etc etc then maybe ride on 4/5 day?? does this sound reasonable, anyone else have a new horse plan??
 
Sounds like a reasonable plan to me, I think you just have to judge them all on their own merits and see how they are on the day and over the next few days. Some go fruitloop, some just get their heads down and eat like it's nothing new.
 
When I got my new boy last year he went straight out in the field (he came from people we knew) on his own but with horses either side of him. I rode him the next day

It's pretty much what I did with my horse when I bought him - except I didn't bring him in, just visited him in the field. I felt he would settle better if left with his new friends if left quietly for a few days.
 
i did complete oposit, only because at my yard its the rule:
new horse;
wormed and in the box for 48hours, - for the wormer to get through the body and somthing else, wich i cant remember, somthing to do with worming :L
- but i think in the stable for 48hours is fine, my mare arrived on evening, rode her in the menarge the next day! she just went back in the stable after, obviously i got her out to muckout + groom, then she got turned out 48hours of arriving.
- its an easier way, knowing that theyre safe in a stable when theyre newbies at the yard

I rode my horse the next day after collecting him from the dealers. He'd come over from Holland the week before. The following weekend I was competing him in his first ever clear round and his first ever SJ derby competition! We got a clear round, followed by fifth in the SJ derby! Okay so it was only 2ft 6 but you have to start somewhere!! You will know if he is settled down enough to ride. I'd spend time messing around with him, ie clipping whiskers, trimming tail, etc.
 
I rode him the day after he came to me, but for the first week we didn't do anything too taxing or keep him away for the field for too long, just to let him settle in.
 
It depends on what the horse's current routine is! If he is in work and ridden most days, I wouldn't recommend a 4/5 day break. Better to get straight onboard so he knows what his job is. Giving him work to do will help to settle him and the exercise will keep him quiet. If you wait, you will be more likely to encounter issues.

I would personally stable him initially (again, if he is used to it) as I find horses settle in better that way, and it is safer than the field. all the best for your new arrival!
