New horse....too good HELP!

Hi Guys, ok i need some serious help and guidance as to what on earth to do!
So i bought a 17 hand irish/TB lovely natured came with everything, got him at a big of a bargain. When i tried him he was totally chilled and relaxed, i tried him a couple of times, and both he was fab!
Problem is i think he is just too good for me in the sense i literaly do not have the time to spend on him to get him to his full potential. with his old owner he had only been hacked for two years, ive takern him schooling....AMAZING! and tried some show jumps, and he appears totally keen! takes you to the jump, hes deffo been schooled well in the past. He very forward going in cross country and we are taking him proper x country schooling on Friday to see how good he can be.
So my problem is i think now im getting older and less time on my hands i feel all i should really get is a cob that i can leave for a few days without being ridden and it be easy to ride etc. The 17 hander needs riding a lot to keep him occupied and i feel i just dont have enough time!! i told the owner i would be keeping him for a long time and so i feel really bad to sell him but i fele im not doing the good chap justice!

He sounds smashing! Why don't you get your instructor to ride him once during the week when you are pushed for time? No guarentee that a cob would be all that sane! If you worry about reaching his potential - don't worry! He certainly won't be!
I'd carry on and enjoy your boy, he sounds just brilliant.
 
Could you not get a sharer? If you just don't have the time to ride him daily, and are not worried about someone paying, I am sure you would have your pick of people to ride him for free!
What is he like if you leave him for a few days without riding?
 
You might be pushed to find another horse who is as fab as this boy sounds!! I'm sure you coud have your pick of sharers :) or a friend who would ride him for you?
Horses don't have any idea about potential as long as they're enjoying themselves having a bit of a jump a hack etc (by the sounds of your boy!)
I wouldn't sell him he sounds much too good to let go of!!

Sounds like you are doing too much thinking and not enough riding if you ask me! Why not just enjoy him whilst you have him and if he needs a lot of riding and you don't have time stick him on the walker or get a sharer. My horse is a lovely ride - ok so he has pysical problems that get in the way at times, but he is active, forwards going, keen, enthusiastic (most of the time - lol) but I don't ride him every day. In fact a lot of the time I can only ride for 20 mins at a time due to my back hurting when I ride. I am past caring what people think. I take him out to comps and he either wins or loses. I don't really care if I'm totally honest. I just enjoy the competition and the thrill of going out and being able to compete.

Instead of worrrying about how good he is and that you are not doing him justice just enjoy him. The thing with horses is that you never know what's round the corner or how long you will have them for before they get injured (or worse) and therefore every minute is precious. For this very reason I do as much competing as I can with my boy which is practically every weekend. In fact if I miss a weekend I get withdrawal symptoms.
 
I also have a horse which has potential to be way beyond my ability. Have been told numerous times now he can go GP dressage. I have often wavered thinking i am holding him back, but you know what, like the others say, they dont know how good they are so as lomg a they are happy and healthy and you are enjoying them then stop worrying about it!

Is there no one at your yard who can ride him for you once or twice a week if you are worriesd about fitness levels? sure you would have your pick of sharers with a horse like that.
 
Horses don't care if they aren't meeting their full potential. If he does what you personally want him to do and enjoy, then just relax and carry on.
