Jasper is a real gem, it seems....took him to that dressage clinic. Loaded first time! Phew! Was very good in the lesson...tho' I was ridiculously nervous in the canter...which is very onward bound and, since I don't know him at all yet, felt a bit scary...I tensed...and rode like a right twit.. Would not load coming home...sigh... Played the patient game and he suddenly leapt up the ramp ( after about 45 minutes). Really frustrated that I am without an arena to work on that canter...The instructor took one look at his neck( very strong, cresty) and reckoned he was used to being hung onto big time...when you allow with the hand he panics and stops! Self carriage will have to be developed. He gets very balled up...hence my anxiety in canter because he FELT like an unexploded bomb, tho' apparently he looked as tho' a buck was the last thing on his mind(it was the first on mine!) just a bit tight and fast. There's nothing like a new horse to make one feel inept as a rider!
The good news is that apart fronm the loading issues( which are getting better, obviously) he was impeccably behaved. Those two chestnut cows, Saffron and purdey, are shunning him in the field, poor lad...he only wants to be friends! He is quite a needy chap, in some ways...
