Hi, Im going to start looking for a new horse for my wife in August( she doesnt know yet) and was wondering wether i should look privately or take her to try horses at dealers. Can anyone recommend me some places anywhere in England ? Looking for a warmblood or irish horse to do a bit of everything at a riding club level.
 
Lost her horse at Xmas due to on going feet problems, we got her from Cavan horse sales, lovely horse but riddled with problems, so been a bit put off going to the sales again. But she has no idea i have put money away for a new one so should be good surprise!
 
I would recommend taking her with you! Sorry! When I lost my horse 18 months ago, I sat on about 30 ranging from £1k-£12k, didnt like any of them...and it took me a year to find my current boy.

It is a lovely surprise and what a lovely husband you are, however do take her, becasue what you like she might not :D
 
I will definately be taking her with me, just going to give her the cash. We are in Windsor, Berks but have no objections to travelling about. Im only doing it because horse pub crawls get a bit difficult on your own
 
ride irish! very very good, went down to look the other day and all of thier horses are as described, we got one vetted the day we went to see it but it sadly failed due to some minor problem, it had come off the lorry from ireland that morning and they think it had just injured itself traveliing!

all very well looked after and look very happy. i know they have a extremely quick turn around due to the qaulity of the horses, the one we went to look at was 15.1hh and jumped the top of the jump for joy wings!

Oh yes, I've heard Ride Irish are very good. I know someone whose bought a lovely sort from them. I think you need to take each horse on its own merits, but sounds like they have a nice selection.
 
Hi, ive heard quite alot of good things about ride irish, can you give me a rough idea of there prices? There not to far from me either. Im taking it that the horses on there website are just a few of what they have and are probably already sold?
 
I'd try both. If you're not experienced take someone who is with you. There will be loads of bargains at the end of the summer if you can bear hanging on. I've bought privately and from a dealer. One dealer I went to was dodgy - couldn't pin them down to get the horse vetted, so we didn't buy it. The next dealer was fantastic - wasn't even there when we went to see the horse - just left the tack with a teenager that mucked out for her!

Both my horses (one private sale, and the one from the dealer) were brought over from Ireland as 4yr olds and both came from Goresbridge sales. The dealer we bought from was telling me about them - the horses have to be vetted by the sales vet, and are shown in an arena -in hand if young, and under saddle - with a full course of fences - if broken. It sounded very interesting, and they used to refund your hotel and travel costs if you bought one! Could be a good weekend away together in the bargain...

I'm going to show your post to my husband. Not holding my breath - already got 4 horses!!
 
Ride Irish horses always seem to cost the top end of your budget whatever it is so don't let on ;)

A friend and I unknowingly of each other both had horses 5 stage vetted there and neither turned out to be what they were advertised as.

However they do have a lot of very nice horses there and providing you get a vetting from a vet you know and trust, then you shouldn't come unstuck.

Having said all that I actually prefer to buy from a well recognised dealer as you have a comeback. I find private sales pesky.

I had a look at Prestwood Farm, nice neddies there, mainly Connies though, don't know if you want a bit bigger?

Elite horses are nice as are the people! They have them in quite a while so really know them. Really no sales pressure either. Give you lots of time with the horse by yourself to make your judgement without feeling pressured.

www.clipcloptraders.co.uk have an EXCELLENT reputation on here, and their horses are reasonably priced. I'm going to be looking in a few months and plan to go there.

I have been to Ride Irish in the past and didn't have a good experienced. Felt pressurised and the horses weren't acurately described. I also feel their horses are quite expensive for what they are.
 
A general comment on dealers, most are pretty good but they are also running a business, the good ones want to achieve good pairings as then people will pass on the good reference, but go in with your eyes open.

Always Vet, whether it is a dealer or a private buyer, one of the down sides of sales is that a full five stage vetting isn't always available.

If you don't mind me asking who was the horse from Cavan? I knew a few that went through there a while ago.
 
If I was looking for an Irish horse I would most likely be off to JanetGeorge's yard first :)

i think catherston stud have a 'closing down' sale have seen a few pics and the horses look stunning. not sure what you are looking for but may be worth a look also summerlees have some really nice horses in.

I cant remeber the horses name, will have a look in the book and let you know, she came from marion hughes. This was about 4 years ago though.
 
Im rubbish at Geography, but I have had a warmblood and and irish horse in the past, both of which came from inglenook stud in Leicestershire, as did my kids current pony. They are really nice people and are mainly a showjumping yard and stud but do have a few in to sell. I think they have a website if you google them. (They are genuinely helpful if there are any problems which occur with the horse too). I have come across lots on people who have bought privately and found the horse wasn't what is was supposed to be. I guess its just a minefield either way. I do highly recommend these dealers though x
 
Another one to say what a lovely man you are to have put money away for a horse for your wife!

I agree with the others though that I think you are going to have to come clean as there sometimes needs to be a chemistry click between horse and rider. It can all look good on paper and still not work out in reality. How about keeping it a surprise, putting her kit in your car and then telling her you are taking her out for the day. Then take her her to where you have something lined up for her? Ride Irish - I have seen some lovely horses out of there but conversly also seen first hand some people treated poorly when there was a problem so eyes open there! They do have really nice stock in though. The Catherston horses I have seen tend to be quite stunning but can be quirky and have needed sensitive handling. There are some horses up for sale at our yard (no this isnt a selling post) but they are all being sold for very specifc jobs so don't think they would be suitable! good luck and let us know how you get on..
 
Ok , its looking like its a drive about trying different places being the option, but wont be until august time so anymore advice or anyone knowing of any is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the input so far.
