or buy a treeless (a good one) with view to it eventually being your spare saddle, or buy an adjustable saddle you know is generally a very good fit for the specific shape of your breed and then get it checked an be prepared to sell it if it doesnt fit.
Yeah, i assume the person can afford a saddle and is just waiting for one? Try and borrow one that fits (if you're good at fitting them) or just lunge etc until you get saddle. I guess you could also buy cheap saddle - but add the 'get it fitted' option!!
Anything else - we borrowed a saddle from someone on our yard for a couple of days - the horse was similar height, weight and breeding - until our saddle fitter could come.

New option, don't buy a horse unless you can afford all that is necessary to keep him.

Sorry to nit pick but a saddle really isnt a neccessity. Neccessities are things a horse cannot live without - ie I would say food, water, shelter, vetinary treatment...
Now a saddle I would say doesn't really fit into that catergory. Thanks for the sarcastic comment anyway though!!!!

I didn't think Thistle's comment was sarcastic in the least. I think she made a very good point; from your original post it would be quite easy to infer that you're struggling to afford a saddle. If this is the case, once you're paying for your horse's upkeep it will be harder for you to buy the saddle so it makes perfect sense to make sure you have to means to acquire one before getting the horse. Now, if you had no intention of riding your horse, then by all means go ahead, but why would you ask about a saddle if you weren't planning on riding??
Delve into the collection and see what might fit, put back the definate will nots, keep the ones that look close, dig out polypads/sheepskin to make do, phone saddler.
If nothing in my collection suits (mine are all wide/xwide/med wide) then look in friends or OH's collection.
Its assuming I don't have the money for a saddle. It would be nice if Thistle asked before making assumptions. I have at least £500 left over from my savings for my horse, but thats put away for emergencies so I was trying not to use it.
i'd try all of my existing collection of Barrie Swaine/Kay Humphries saddles on, which are super comfy for horse and which i have in quite a few different shapes and fittings. If nothing's a perfect fit, horse gets a new one or two!
my bum can't stand synthetic saddles, so no choice for me!
i got my 3 swaine ones off ebay for £250 (the gp for my 3 yr olds) and £200 each for the dressage ones. fab.
I would get a synthetic one off of ebay with an adjustable gullet, and a thick polypad...... hopefully it will fit, but if not you will have some money in your emergency fund for the physio
Not being sarky, or mean, but really if you want to ride its a bit of a necessity to have a saddle.... unless you are really happy bareback (I am most deffo not)!!
Well if you can't afford to tax the car where is the point in having it?! I would save up and get a decent saddle that is fitted and will last a few years, I always think cheap saddles to tide you over are a false economy. In the mean time I suppose try to borrow a saddle that fits as well as can be expected. Though it's like borrowing other people's bra, the chances are they're not going to be the same size! I vote for riding bareback but I sold my saddle and rode bareback for about 3 years so I'm pretty much happy getting on anything without a saddle (and falling off in rather comedy fashion!)
Erm because in two weeks time you'll have the money for tax? lmao this is such a stupid argument anyway as most of you seem to have ignored the fact I DO have money for a saddle, what Im asking is should I get a cheapo or wait for a good one?
The saddler came out and my two saddles do not fit the horse, so I will have to wait now until I save up for a good one.
