Hi,

I just bought a new Ifor Williams horse box. I can't seem to get the (human) door unlocked. My first challenge is that I don't know if the key slot set perpendicular or horizontal means the door is unlocked. My second challenge is that in either position, I can't get the handle to move more than a tiny bit. I also don't know if it should turn the handle counter-clockwise or clockwise.

I'm hoping another Ifor Williams owner could give me step-by-step directions for unlocking and opening the door. I know this sounds kind of silly but I think it might just be a little stuck because it's new. At the same time, I'm afraid to twist anything too hard, for fear of breaking something.

I think from memory you have to turn it up, ie anticlockwise from the outside to open it. Mine was stiff when new and the seal around the door was 'tacky' which didn't help. From the inside I still find it tough to open so give it a good boot on the metal support bar whilst holding the handle open. I've had the lock / handle replaced once under warranty due to it being near impossible to open (it was a known problem).

I've never locked mine but can check tomorrow morning if the key slot is vertical or horizontal when unlocked if that's any help. I think (trying to think practically) that the key slot would be horizontal when locked, eg you've turned the key to the right and it has in turn sent the locking mechanism out to the right into the other half of the lock fitting. Ok, now I'm making it up and rambling :p

Do you have a mk1 or mk2? If the former, I think they can be a bit sticky. We've a mk2 and it's fine.
Do you have a local Ifor Williams dealer near you, if not ring one and they should be able to help.
Good luck :)

Turn it anticlockwise to open from the outside, I accidentally locked the door from the inside last week, my key didn't seem to work but I was able to unlock from inside the trailer!!

i had the same problem had to get someone to show me...you turn it up. i had to turn quite hard but now its done a few times its loosened off.

They are definitely quite hard to do, but ....you turn the key anti- clockwise to unlock, at the same time turning the handle slightly anti-clockwise too.

Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement! I'll give it another try tomorrow and will be looking for a response from Angelbones who generously offered to take a look at her lock.

I did try to open it from the inside, but didn't think that was even possible, so I'll take another look at that as well.

:):):):):)

I have a mark 2 about a year old and mine was very stiff too. I put some WD40 in the lock form the outside and this helped and turn the key backwards and forwards then it is just trial and error to work out which way it has to be so you can open it from the inside. It is a bit stiff so give it a good turn. Leave the front ramp down so you can still get out!!!!

I have a new one... And yes the jockey door lock is rubbish.... I took mine back and was told by the dealer that he has had loads back..... Design fault..
