New laminitis drug!

Wow that is very exciting news! Fingers crossed the clinical trials continue to go well and the drug becomes available here ASAP. The fact that it has been approved for human use is a massive plus as it means its been through a lot of stringent testing already.

I'm so pleased to read this, thanks for posting! :)

Very good news, if it works!

I'd be interested if it could teach us anything about managing low grade laminitis. It seems that it works by preventing the release of histamine and related immune response compounds.

Would anti histamines help I wonder, or would the difference in how they work mean that they're ineffective?

I do find it VERY interesting that mast cell stabilisers such as this drug work by blocking the passage of calcium to the mast cells - excess calcium (and insufficient magnesium and phosphorus) is known to cause footiness... is there a link, I wonder?

TwoStroke what's this about excess calcium causing footiness? I've never heard that before but it's made me think - mine are on chalk & both seem to be better on their feet when I feed bran. Can you point me to anything about this?

Very exciting,my vet will read it,maybe we can get it for my mare,do anything to end this awful period in her life

Nari, there's a great lack of studies on this subject, so the evidence is all anecdotal, sadly. A forage analysis of your grazing would tell you the mineral profile. You can also google the NRC recommendations for mineral balances (I'm on phone, so can't post link, sorry). Most feed companies balance according to the NRC recommendations, which would be correct... If your forage had a perfect mineral balance. That's why I stick to products like forage plus and pro hoof, which are true forage balancers.
