Finally decided to replace my old lorry. Can anyone recommend builders in midlands, derbyshire, Worcs area? Im after a 2 horse side load, rear facing on 7.5 chassis. Would 25k be a realistic budget for 2004-06 chassis? Thanks

I think they are a little further south than what are looking at but I really do love my Peper Harow Trophy Twin (although mine is older than what your looking for) Fabulous design with a HUGE area for the horses and well thought out storage/living etc.

Mine is only a 6.5ton but is stalled for two large 17.2hh horses and has just a smidge over 2 tonnes of payload - probably more payload than you will get on a lot (if not most!) 7.5t boxes x

I am curious about this answer to this one as well, I was looking for a non HGV side ramp rear facing lorry with decent payload and they are rare! I was considering getting one built after my current lorry dies (hopefully not for a few years yet!)

I really like the Peper Harrow boxes but thought they were all forward facing rather than rear facing? Or do they do both now?

My peper harow is forward facing and the horses travel immaculately in it - you never hear them so much as move a hoof. The breast bar is also collapsible should the worst ever happen.

The one I have is completey designed for having as large an area for the horses as possible whilst maximising storage space. It has an outside tack locker on the rear of the box which goes about halfway up the height of the vehicle - its huge! The top of this tack locker (which the horses bums go against) is also a very deep shelf in the rear of the horse area (big enough to fit bales of hay etc in - I keep our tables and chairs in that bit generally) so it means you pretty much dont have to put any horse stuff in the living whatsoever without having any lockers encroaching on the horses area.

I believe Peper Harow will make rear facing ones though if thats what you prefer :) Personally I wouldnt change the layout of mine its pretty much perfect for what we want. (Mine is certainly not one of the new ones by any means being a P reg but is absolutely immaculate its my complete pride and joy :) ) It took me months of searching to find mine but out of everything we went to look at it was certainly by miles the best designed for horses and humans.

Oakland in Worcs have got one but it is £65k. I would say your budget is way off for a new build. I have been looking at £20k mark and been shocked at how old they are or tatty they are! Good luck.

£25k would buy a chassis and leave plenty change but not enough to build the container on it IMO. I had a 7.5t built about 3 years ago, standard design with basic living, no shower or loo on an 04 chassis. Think that cost me around £32k

Emsley Metcalfe in Wolvey, near Hinckley. (2mins off M69). They built me a 2 horse lorry, forward facing, side ramp, basic living on a 6.5 ton Iveco last year. The payload I have is 2.38 tons (with diesel on board).

At the time of looking the Daf 7.5 ton chassis were coming in a lot cheaper than the 6.5ton ones, so you could be pleasantly surprised on price. Talk to Guy....he will build to your budget within reason. http://www.emsley-metcalfe.com/index.html

PS Forgot to say, I am VERY pleased with the lorry.

PM your email; I have several of it in build but only one of the finished article. Have been meaning to get some for insurance purposes, so will take some more in next day or so.

Mine cost a lot less! I had a 7 year old chasis and day living (no luton) and i am sure it cost £18,000. The chap who did mine is based in Staffordshire. I can pass on the deatials. He is a one man band and we had issues with the finanal finsih (all resolved in the end!). He isn't as professional as the big comapanies (Ie he has a barn that he does the work in and thats it - no flashy website or showroom) but i guess that is why he is cheep!

My conversion on a 7 yr old chassis cost £18k a few years ago, it was basic but the horse area every bit as good as a posh wagon and built by a reputable company. Not sure how much a coach build would cost as a new build but I expect nearer £30k plus.

thanks all for the suggestions. 65k is a bit out of my league im afraid . im really after more of a hunter lorry....smart safe horse area and just bench seat and saddle racks on living . love the peper harow ones but out of budget unless a nice second hand one crops up. thanks cx

Coach built to me means the builer starting with just the chassis cab, the whole horsebox bit is then built, from scratch on the chassis. If the builder leaves an existing box type container on the chassis and changes it into a horse box this would be a conversion
