after lungeing Frank last night and him getting ridiculously sweaty under it again I decided to bite the bullet and pull the mane a bit for summer.

Am still getting used to it. Plan to possibly leave it to grow out again for winter not sure. Its not that short as I didn't think it would lie flat as is still quite puffy! I actually did it twice it was longer the first time but just seemed to look a bit silly and boxy so this was second go.

Might need to thin a bit more from the underside but he was such a good boy about it I decided to leave it at that for the time being.

what do you think? Don't mind if you say its horrid!

am wondering if it will make me go faster (less drag!) anyone want to see it shorter or do you think it is about right?

Ps for those that missed first post he was hogged when bought 4 years ago and once it had grown and was lying flat I kinda didn't notice it anymore but I do tend to get a little tangled up sometimes in jump offs.

your vote is noted temsik!

mum got a shock when she went out to the field this morning, thought she had a diff pony!

Hehe well you know my thoughts on it, but I must say that it looks ok! I still prefered it long though, and def wouldn't go shorter!!!

Thank goodness! For a minute, I thought I was going to see a hogged mane!!!

Seems to a fashion up north at the moment to hog anything and everything from thoroughbred crosses and warmbloods to natives.

He looks great, by the way.

and given that thanks for saying ok!) do plan to let it grow again in winter cos he is full clipped so it keeps his neck warm and dry then. Am interested to see how quick it grows, if its anything like his tail will be bloody quick!

you will laugh at this , ive got a chestnut mare and had her for 8 years with a long mane , i like hogged manes , it looked chewed so i decided to pull but ive not got much patience, and it looked dreadful once id finished it , so i hogged it , she is half arab, with a 2ft mane , and i am so glad i did it she looks gorgeous and whats more when she takes off i can now find my rein if i loose it , so glad i did it will always chop off now , looks like a polo pony , people at the yard like it too ,

lol temsik (If I do see you out may have to hide frank round a corner before you attack him with a pulling comb!) am getting to like it I think.

Charlyan sorry to panic you can't say I haven't been tempted (cos then would whack the feathers off too his back ones get quite pink and sore when he gets sweaty). I was appalled that a welshie was hogged when I bought him but can kindof see why they did (he still had a forelock) He did actually look quite smart. But it took a year to grow out to sitting sensibly and don't want to go through that again (and it is a nice colour!)

Hoping I might get less tangled up in jump offs now too.- not all the time but rather frustrating when it happens.

wafarerwithch, mums is a half arab with 2 foot mane but she really would kill me..................... she is a palo too

!

i should, i'm well known for attacking everything with mane combs! except my mates arab, im not even allowed look at that!
ets- there is a for attention of post i just made for you above btw!

I would like it much shorter!

as a general rule of thumb, i pull my horse's mane to roughly the length of those little metal combs (lengthwise

)

I like to do the economy cut, and I like short mane as easier to plait
smile.gif

plait!! no plaiting he's welsh! It is still very very thick so would prob be like golf balls.

I would pull most to half that but thought he was maybe a special case! Also concerned that it would just stick straight up and that I wouldn't be able to get it think enough to lie flat

Seeing as hes a welsh i def would not pull it any shorter if anything i would have left it longer but yhe looks good anyway

His mane looks heaps better and he is probably much happier.

My I place a vote for it to go shorter still please? i think he'll look super with some more off as he's got a lovely neck

gingerbird, vote noted, I think it all depends on if I think I can get it thin enough to lie flat and am going to canvass opinions from others.

Would also just like to say he is not quite as round as he makes out in the first pic! He is just very relaxed and spent the night on some grass. Its amazing how much better he looks when I ride him and he actually applies his stomach muscles to do something as he is in pretty hard work at the mo. There are ribs and no apple bottom but he does tend to carry a belly.
