I know this should be in stable yard - but il get more response in here!!

Does anyone use this? And is it any good?

Also any recommendations for other good joint suppliments (not cortaflex tho) for arthritic horses?
 
Have been using this on my horse for the past 3 years, she had a joint problem and vet recommended i put her on it. When i did i noticed she did seem more comfortable and was more 'free' in her movement ( if that makes sense!) It is rather expensive and can only get it from the vets but i do prefer it over cortaflex.
 
My mare has had it since a joint problem a couple of years ago. She hasn't had a recurrence of the problem since - whether that is because of the supplement or not, who knows! I've kept her on it after vets advice anyway.

You can get it on line now I think - try Google, they may bring up some good deals.
 
Is NJS pure glucosamine? I thought latest research indicated that a combo of glucosamine and chondroitin was the most effective? In which case for the vet supplied stuff you are looking at synequin/cosequin. There are lots of supps you can buy in the tack shop but most would be a waste of money.
Riaflex claims to supply a very high level of glucosamine plus chondroitin at an excellent price, so if the tub contains what it says it does (and it has been shown that not all products do!) then this could be a good buy.
 
yes it is pure - ive been looking at research and theres so much conflicting stuff out there its hard to know what to believe!

I havent heard of Riaflex - il look into that aswell.
 
Was told by my vet when a horse on the yard had joint problems that Synequin was by far the most superior in the joint supplements.....
 
Yeah there is so much conflicting research out there! The newmarket one is meant to be good, but then there is research suggesting the pure Glucosamine doesnt have as good an effect as combined products.
 
It's amazing isn't it - when I first started using Newmarket supplement, research showed that pure glucosamine was more effective than a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin!

Do you know of any published research in this area? I'd be really interested to read it.
 
I've been using it, and its made a big difference to Chex. There does seem to be a lot of conflicting advice about this

. My friends vet said last time that Synequin, Cosequin and NJS are ones he would reccomend, because they've all been tested scientifically and proved to make a difference. Of course they are the 3 most exensive

I've just started Pernamax to see if it makes more of a difference than NJS, but I doubt it will.

I bought my NJS online, didn't need a prescription or anything.
 
Also u can claim it back if its perscribed/recommended by a vet! I used it on my mare when she did a high suspensory 2 yrs ago and i think it helped.
 
I use Newmarket for my mare for her arthritis - she has been on it since 2004. She had her hocks injected and remedial shoeing and put on newmarket which was recommended by my vet and hospital. As it is the purest form of gloucosamine (or however you spell it!) he said it was the best for her. She is an ex-racer tb and was 16 at the time. It has been brilliant for her, she cant go a day without it.
She is now retired and barefoot on her hinds but still has the supplement every day. I had her on other supplement before but it just obviously wasnt good enough - hence she went totally lame and then had the injections.
So I believe it is good!!!
 
Pidge has been on this for a month a half now and will stay on it permanently now. He is feeling very well in himself
