i was at work last night and when i got home this morning the goat had blood over her tail and back end i then found out that their jack russel who is a yappy snappy little sod had got in the field somehow and attacked her and have bitten the tip of her tail off and mauled the rest of it i have told them they will be getting the vets bill which for some reason they think is unfair i dont think i am being unreasonable after all the woman knows her dog doesnt like the goat as she said the other day "my dog doesnt like any other animals and always barks at your goat"

Is it your land that the goat resides in?

if it is, put a sign up RE. Trespassing and get the old shotgun out.

Why should you have to pay/change how you keep your livestock for an out of control animal?

That's what a friend did when an English mastiff attacked his ram.. Twice. The old lady thought it was fine as the dog was exercising "/

Crickey! Why havent you got better fencing! Been here before plus a court case.... I am so on your side, have you been gathering evidence? If not then you best start.

Do they have public liability insurance? Need to get vets involved if you want to take it anywhere. She needs to keep her dog under control around livestock so she is in the wrong but I takes a lot to prove when you are neighbours....

i rent my house and the field the goat is in belongs to my landlord and he said that if he had been a bit quicker last night he would have shot the dog the owner is one of his other tenants and he has told them if he sees the dog off the lead again they will have to leave the wife is ok but the husband is a cock and its him who is saying their not paying but hopefully the landlord will make them pay anyway its not the money its poor lucy (goat)i feel for

you can shoot dogs for worrying livestock. Contact the Police and tell them your goat has been worried. They will call round and probably caution the dog owners.

poor lucy, very good to know that your landlord is on side though, hopefully the threat of being chucked out will improve the situation.

at least the landlord is on your side:) really can't understand some peoples attitude to their animals behaviour, i would be devastated if my dogs bit or even chased any animal!

not my fencing i have proper sheep wire the whole lot bloody dog jumped over gate 2 years ago her brother was killed by a pit bull as the 2 boys down the road put it over the fence into the field that was taken away by the police and eventually destroyed the thing with goats is they can become like dogs and become your freind and even though she is a funny ugly old bag i love her to bits

Crikey! They'd be getting more than a vet bill off me! Throw in a few choice words, and the threat of a bullet if I ever saw it anywhere near my livestock again, and that's a bit more like it!
Out hacking years ago and me and my pony were chased and attacked by a staffy. I jumped off and booted it as hard as I could, only to be shouted at and threatened with "legal action" by the owner who miraculously appeared from behind a hedge! Bl**dy ridiculous - I was speechless, apparently I am to allow a snarling dog to tear chunks out of me/pony, and how very dare I defend myself/us?

i think my landlord was glad i wasnt at home as he knows what i am like about my animals fallen out with all the do as you likeys down the end of the road i would have gone mental thats my problem i dont think when i lose it its only afterwards i think oops should have dealt with that in a different way

I'm the same, cs, I'm very (stupidly) protective of my animals and can over react if their safety is threatened in any way. Its totally understandable!

Feeling your pain..Do tell them you will shoot it (regardless if you have a gun-they need not know) Put warning sign re the same & dogs in vacinity must be strictly kept undercontrol on leads at all times. Send her the vet bill and log everything. Photos of tail too before it heals. Get landlord to write a letter. Inform police(they won't get involved at this stage) dog warden & council.

Are you able to put up even one line of elec fence? I use the green 110cm high poultry netting on mains ever since my trouble, despite being fully hedged, stockfenced & top rail elec. things like this really make me blow my fuse!

My ewes with lambs at foot were worried by neighbours 2 labs & died of broken necks & heart attacks. Lambs left orphaned. Neighbours were up in arms as their darlings surely couldn't have as soooo well trained gun dogs...maybe only playing. same old rubbish...anyway. I am now the bad person for suggesting it could ever have happened! Not even a sorry.lambs all ok but my flock is smaller than it should have been,my ewes were killed & i had to pay for the necessaries & removal...NOT happy! Offend them as much as you need to, for Lucy's sake. Is she horned or disbudded? My pygmys don't take any messing & even set about my sleeping ram once because he had pulled a face at them earlier..gang warfare at its finest! Llama/alpaca or geese I suggest or a very angry billy!Plan c...give me her number -I could do with a rant!;-)hope all resolves for you and Lucy is ok....brandy & milk bran mash for her tonight?xx

I would definitely call the police and talk to the dog warden. Once a dog has learnt to worry livestock, it's very likely to happen again, small dog or not. What are they doing letting it loose like that? Were they there at the time or is it allowed out unsupervised?

:mad::mad:

apparently they were walking it and let it off the lead and it jumped over the gate into Lucys field and went straight up and attacked her and those jack russells can be very bad in the wrong hands i have a terrier but she wouldnt do that she plays with lucy just idiot people owning dogs the dog is at home all day on its own while they work why would you have a dog if thats the case my dog comes to work with me as well as the stables

I will hold my hand up and say my rescue terrier has "issues" with livestock. I'm working on it, but he is never, ever, let off the lead anywhere where he could get to lifestock. If we go somewhere where there are a lot of sheep visible, he not only stays on the lead, he's muzzled too just in case.

He came to me with this problem from his past, but now it's my responsibility to keep him away from farm animals. He's great with other dogs so in city parks he can have a good run. But in the countryside, he'll never be let off. Neither should this jrt.

Get a guard llama. The dog won't visit again.

Sorry but this did make me laugh. Do people actually have guard llamas? Do they work well? Excuse my ignorance, I don't know very much about them.

OP: As others have said, make it very clear that the dog will be shot if he/she is seen in the field again. If they kick up a fuss then make it clear that the law does not tolerate worrying livestock. In the meantime could you put something on the gate to make it more dog proof?

Just to add: hope your goat gets better, just seen the picture of her and she looks like such a sweetie.

Poor old goatee. Vets pics etc and police. You should report it to them, if they are not going to listen to you and take this seriously then get the police to speak to them.

I hope your landlord turfs them out. JRuss could easily kill the goat if it wanted to. It will be back.

The dog owner has not got a good attitude if my dog injured another animal I would always pay the vet bill and I certainly would make sure my dog doesnt ever do this again. Just as I would expect someone else to pay if they damage my animal.

Shame to shoot it but if it does come back now they need to be warned of the consequences. But you need to inform cops.

Poor goat. No practical advice other than what others have said, hope your landlord & the police can sort it for you.

Take photographs of your goats injuries and make some notes of the incident

I would go to your local police station and report the incident. Ask them for an incident number so that you know it has been logged in to their system.

Then report it to your local district council dog warden.

Write a letter to your neighbours describing the attack and advising them that you will expect them to pay the vets bill within 14 days - if they fail to do so you will make a claim through the small claims court.
Also ask them to keep their dog under control and advise them that if their dog worries livestock that they risk having their dog shot.

Also contact BHS, they have beein keeping a log of dog attacks.
Sadly the police are unlikely to do much (personal experience speaking) unless the dog goes for one of their own.
Print out a copy of the dangerous dogs act and take it with you to thrust under there nose.
I have no problems with dogs, its the irresponsible owners I can't stand!
One of my horses kicked a dog that tried to bite her, the owner threatened to sue, shame they didn't have it on the lead rather than allowing it to chase my horse!

From previous experience contact the dog warden first, they are more likely to bring a prosecution but they won't get involved if the police are dealing with it.
