Just bought a new pony that's never been affiliated.

His passport name is Toby.

Do I have to use this as his Bsja name or can I give him something a little more original? Rather than getting Toby (whatever the next numeral is). Which I can't actually work out on the horse search list, I think it may be Toby VI but not sure.

Depends on the type of passport.

If he is British or Irish bred, with breeding in his passport, he must remain with that name.

Foreign horses, or British/Irish bred without recorded breeding may have a different name.

British passport with no breeding. He's new forest x connie.

So it's time to think of an interesting name for Toby???

Any ideas?

I didn't think that you had to? My friend's son's pony has a different BSJA name to whats on his passport.

Pony's passport name is Ross he gets called Diesel and his BSJA reg name is TDI.

Pretty sure you can apply to have his name changed but the bsja might just reject it and name him as Toby, it is supposed to be name on passport and they are quite strict. They only allow foreign horses to change if their name is extremely long or hard to pronounce I think

You used to be able to choose a name. We had a mare called Bambi on passport, chose 'There's your Change' for its BS name. That was in 2006. Now they have to have whatever the passport name is. If there's already a Toby they would add a number so it would be Toby IV or whatever. The only way to get round it is to change his name on his passport but they'll be a charge xx
