Well all was going well with new stressy pony, she had got much better at being handled and hacking out was going really well. In the past month we have hacked out past big agricultural machines, chain saws, cars, cows with no problems, been for lovely canters down lanes and really enjoyed hacking out. Today when I went to get her in she was a lot more stressed than usual when tacking up. Then she was quite nappy, and when she realised we were doing the long route she decided to do the alligator move! This is when she zig zags down the lane trying to find somewhere to back up and turn around. I kept her going forward in a trot, I am not sure if this battle of wills somehow wound her up, but when we got to a fork in the lane I went to turn right, well in the field next to us where some workers sowing seeds. Apparently this is the most terrifying thing ever! The following is partly my fault I think as instead of pushing forward when I felt her go to nap, I for some odd reason thought I would let her look at what was going on to see it was nothing, however, she did not agree with it being nothing. She almost dunked me in the river, went backwards sideways, threatened to rear, was sweating like crazy and I swear I could hear her heart beating! So I decided to take her left instead, it still meant we had to come back this way but thought maybe a good idea to chill out and try again. On the way back she was panicking already knowing where we were going to pass, and to top it off there were now three canoers on the river!!!

I am at a lose as to why she reacted to intensly, when she is usually ok! Any ideas? and good tips on what I should ahve done differently please as I feel I let myself and her down slightly!

I also know now why she has very bad ground manners, after talking with old owner it turns out she was rewarded with treats for barging with her head and all the other naughtythings she does as the old owner thought it was cute! I think she hates me as I don't reward her for these things!

Have you been hacking in company or on your own?

Only on my own. There is one other person I can go out with, but she is scared to hack her horse out so don't think it will be a good combination for the minute.

I usually manage to get her going forward again after a napping session but today there was no way!

She is possibly coming into season or maybe the flush of Spring grass is making her more excited/nervous?

Could you find someone to come out with you on foot or bicycle? Some horses find it reassuring to have any sort of company & it will also help you to stay relaxed, chatting to your companion.

Do you have access to a school or could you enclose a flat corner of a field so that you could do some gentle schooling? Do you have any help or lessons?

Good luck, i'm sure she will improve if you stay consistent & don't give up :-)

I thought this too, as she was much more difficult today. I have only had her a month, the first week she was in season so could you really be in season again?

As far as I am aware (have never owned a mare!) they come into season every 20-23 days, so yes it is possible she is in season again.

I have a school so will do some schooling with her. She has never really worked on the flat ie dressage on cso or hacking. She is 15 and I sold my comp horse to buy an older horse like her to be a happy hacker. I gave up my lessons as well. I did show today her lack of schooling as I couldn't shoulder in past the scary things!

It really sounds like she's in season. The May seasons often tend to be the worst too. I have mine on Equistro Betamag 12 which really helps and is cheaper and more effective than the Oestress we had them on before. Still quite a few pennies though.

OK thanks everyone. This is my first mare so never experienced this very tempermental side of things. Will try her on a mare supplement.

We have had our mare 5yrs and she still goes through episodes like this....we can take 3 steps forward and 2 steps back ....know how it feels.I agree with the other posters could be her season and just general mare type behaviour.Don,t be put off we were,nt and as a result have a lovely relationship with our girl ..hormones and all xx
