Hi All,
We have just loaned our first pony for my daughter. We have had her for 3 weeks now and she's settling in very well considering she's come from a very busy yard to being on her own. I've lots of support from horsey friends so am very lucky and they reassure me that I'm doing well. To be honest i feel quite overwhelmed with trying to establish a routine that works for us. Her owner has made me feel quite anxious about the risks of Laminitis - even though she hasnt had it. In her old home she was mainly stabled and fed on hay but we have land and I'm keen to turn her out as much as possible especially through summer. At the moment I'm strip grazing her - turning her out overnight with a muzzle on as our grass is very rich then bringing her in during the day. Once she's eaten the grass down I'm hoping she wont need the muzzle on much. She's much happier outside where she can see the sheep next door and whinny to the ponies down the valley. My daughter is riding her 4-5 times a week and she's been so good so far. I've got loads to learn but must admit that i worry about her much more than I thought I would!
