Hiya
After losing our dog in May in an awful accident we are hoping to bring home a new puppy tomorrow! Yay!

However! His breeder has not had his vaccinations yet, he is almost 18 weeks old. She says he is due it on Friday which is when he is 18 weeks exactly as she does not agree with vaccinating before this date due to conflictions in the maternal antibodies or whatever.

Now I don't want to get into a debate about whether this is the right thing to do and I intend to get him vaccinated myself on Friday if we bring him home tomorrow. But, is this a risk? He is fine healthy and happy at present and doesn't mix with any other dogs other than his brother and sister.

It seems the norm to get them done at 8 weeks so I am a bit concerned that my vet will have a fit or this may be bad for his health in any way. Although looking on google brings up lots of conflicting advice and in america they don't recommend vaccinating until 16-18 weeks......

We have no other dogs here so he isn't at high risk or anything. How long after the 1st jab can they mix with other dogs?

I persoanlly don't agree with that, and feel they are just trying to save the £££££, how on earth has the puppy or any other adult dog in that household been out to be socialised without being vaxed, because that would be a huge risk on the puppies behalf

And if he has not been passed the doors at this age, then I feel they are more bsb then responsible breeder, as socialising at a young age is crucial for development.

Your vet will be fine, it's not your fault and was not your decision to not vax till this stage, jsut keep him in your arms, confined to your own garden(if u have neighbours with dogs, make a little pooh and wee wee puppy pen)

so he cannot get to the fence to sniff or have contact with other dogs but he can still go in the garden for do do's

and away from other dogs till he is fully vaxed.

Is this a small breed puppy?

He's a british bulldog, so not exactly small!

Yes I thought it was a bit strange, but they've done everything else you would expect, he comes with kc reg and 3 months free insurance, wormed, vet checked and fleed etc.

How far apart do the vacs need to be? How soon until he can be socialised as norm? We go on a break in a months time and I had arranged for my mother to look after him but she has a dog (who is eldery and has always been boostered etc) is this a risk?

I got my pups at 13weeks. They had had their first vaccs at the rescue centre but when we took them for their 2nd with our vet they both had temperatures so couldn't have them. The had picked up an internal parasite at the rescue which took well over a month to clear up so we couldn't vaccinate them until they had the all clear. Fortunately we got 2 so they had company and a very big garden to play and train in but we couldn't take them out because of the risk of them pooing and another dog picking up the parasite. As soon as you get the dog take it to the vets for a check over and 1st round of vaccs so you can get out and about asap. Its a 2 weeks gap between the vaccs so your break shouldn't be a problem unless there are complications like with mine.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. We lost a foxhound when he was hit on the motorway last year and we all still miss him terribly.

I'm afraid that I'd be more worried about the puppy having missed it's crucial socialisation period than the jabs. I'd be wanting to get the them done asap and then get him out and about as much as possible, 18 weeks is very old to have only socialised with siblings.

Thanks for the replies.

RH, we lost our dog after we were attacked by cattle whilst walking on a public footpath (dog on a lead and 100m away from nearest cows!) and my partner was also seriously injured so I don't think we will ever get over it really.

I have spoken to my lovely vets and if I get him this afternoon they can fit us in for vaccs tomorrow so hopefully not long and he'll be out and about. I think they also have his mum, granddad and grandma at home so hopefully not just with his siblings but I agree, I will hopefully be able to get him out and about soon!
