Could I ask a puppy question please. Our new pup is nine weeks old and a fox terrier lakeland cross. We have had her a week. She has taken to her crate and sleeps really well at night. I have two minor problems. One is house training. We are following the ian Dunbar method and she pees and poos v quickly once she is outside. However even within 1/2 hr of this toilet break she can pee on the floor even when I am playing with her and engaging with her. Its occasional not all the time. Hopefully this will resolve in the near future will it? Also.. walking on the lead.. If she doesn't follow me, and I shake her treat box and she still doesn't come what should I do next? I don't want to reel her in like a fish, but I don't want to lift her all the time either. Once she is walking she walks well, naturally to heel... I'd be grateful for any extra tips x

At 9 weeks her bladder is tiny, any excitement could cause it to empty. Reduce the gap between toileting to half an hour so you can praise her for getting it right.

A 9 weeks I certainly wouldn't be walking a puppy outside away from home. I do most of my early heel work off lead around the garden and house just encouraging pup to be with me.

I am not an expert by any means but I did find with my pup that 1/2 hour toilet breaks were not frequent enough. Every 15 mins was more realistic. Even then it still took time; she wasn't really house trained till about 4 months, more reliable at 6 months. She is now 8 months and I can't remember the last time she had an accident = but it took a lot longer to get to that stage than I imagined it would!

I can't be much help with lead training as mine was very rearly on a lead as a pup. I did however always have a pocket full of treats to train recall and would also praise/rewards at any time that she naturally volunteered the heel position.

You beat me to it and worded it so much better :)

At 9 weeks puppy should not be walking anywhere due to not having full cover from vaccinations, take her out and about carrying to see the world and meet lots of people, encourage her to follow you off lead with pay in the garden so chase games and the like and when she ca go out from a vaccination point of view you will find it easier to encourage her along with you due to your off lead practice/training

Oh Fiona, she looks very sweet and ever so pretty. What have you called her? I bet her little coat won't last long, she will soon outgrow it.

Ok. It's nearly 2 years since mine was that age, and my memory is not that great, but I followed my Mum's house training method which was outside after every meal/drink, immediately on waking and as often as possible in between those events. Also, when they start sniffing round they are generally looking for a good weeing point so into the garden again. Of course I sensibly got my last pup in June so housetraining was an absolute pleasure!

I did have the odd accident when he was little, due mostly to not watching him like a hawk, but he is 100% reliable now.

As for walking on a lead, I actually cannot remember. I know I carried him in a handbag a lot whilst walking my old dog. I think he used to wake up, yap and wriggle bit, I would put him on the floor and he would follow my old chap for a few yards and then back in the handbag he went, so I never really trained him, he just picked it up.

Anyway, I am sure you will get as much pleasure from yours as I do mine and you will soon be over the worst, but cutest bit.

If you do get a Kong, make sure its the black one!!!

Beautiful little pup! We carried our eight week schnauzer everywhere to start with, popping her into a bag for the high dog trafficked places...after vaccines were finished we started lead work out doors, but practiced at home in the garden at the beginning.
She didn't really start lead walking until about three months and only for short bursts..by 5 m she could do a twenty minute walk.

She is gorgeous. We do 20minute wee breaks with young pups, it is very boring but tghey do learn very quickly.
Agree with others about walking outside, lead walking takes time to terach and you do have the odd fish moment, thinkof her like a horse and in the house or garden teach her to react positively to pressure - sowhile she is on the lead call her and pull gently while offering a treat.
And please lose the rug, she is a terrier not a whippet!! (LOL).

Defo no walks outside your garden til she's had all her vaccs and the vet has given you the all clear. She won't be able to fight off infections at her age. Carry her when out and about. Vaccinated friends' dogs can come for playtime.

Re on lead walks, make yourself more exciting, squeaky toys are great for this, especially as she's a terrier. A gentle tug is ok, don't yank her. Lots of high voice commands, tons of praise, still works on my nearly six year olds. She may not be too bothered about food yet.

I would also say don't walk until fully vaccinated, but just in case this is on private land as in you have a large property so can be sure it's safe without being fully vaccinated remember to not exceed the 5 min/month rule when you 'walk' her. So at 9 weeks she is only 2 months old so should only be out for 10 minutes. She may slam the breaks in if she's tired and if so its really important you don't force her as its bad for her joints.

Thanks folks for all the replies. ....

Today we have gone outside more frequently and no mistakes so far :) Yesterday's was after 40 min and she ran from one end of the kitchen to the other to greet hubby coming out of bathroom, and peed lol. I guess it was my fault for letting her away from me as she was on my knee chewing a kong... A puppy one not a black one lol...

She's actually 10 weeks to be fair. Breeder gave her first vacc on 2nd Feb and when I called vets to ask they said she could have second one after a fortnight so she had it today the 20th..

Up to now her walking has mainly been in our fields or along a neighbours nearby lane. ..

Today she was appallingly not interested in walking up the lane, but trotted back beside me quite happily..

However walked really well on a tiny walk at a local beauty spot this afternoon. Maybe she doesn't want to leave home?

And finally, I love her coat ;) It belonged to my late jrt and I will be gutted when she grows out of it lol ;)

I like the squeaky toy idea for walks :)

galaxy can I be really thick, and say that I thought the rules on length of walks were for large breeds not small ones.

Have I got that completely wrong :(

Smitty she is called lilly or lily bop.....

And yes I definitely enjoy potty training more in the summer.

Hubby has jury service in july though so I wanted her well settled in by then.....

I think all pups, regardless of breed have the same joint delay forming (if you understand?!) Have to be super careful with strain on their tiny joints, hence limiting their walks, and no jumping off furniture ect..
I have been told several contradicting things about walking after vaccinating.. vet nurse said 48 hours after second jab, vet said 1 week after second jab. No public places, own garden/fields should be fine if you can guarantee there has been no non vaccinated dogs there before?? Correct me if I'm wrong?
My, now nearly 8 month old, did very basic introductions to lead walks in my garden before we went out for max 10 mins 3 times a day - was very boring for me, only to the lane and back! She has only just started being allowed to jump out of the car! (Maybe i'm being precious!!)
'Potty training' took forever - I was losing hope! But, it did click...at about 5 months!!

It is all breeds. I expect if you're going over that's why she grinding to a halt, she's tired. When they are young they don't need much exercise at all.

Did you vet say that you could walk her straight after the second vaccine? They usually tell you to wait at least a week/10 days for the vaccine to work and give coverage. Be very careful as if you take her places as there is parvo around

When Daisy was a puppy we did very little on lead walking (obviously this was in safe areas), still don't really. At that age (I found), they wanted to follow you, and so we used that desire to work on recall. Introducing the lead in short spells a little later.

Fiona - your little pup is just gorgeous!!
