Hi all,
We have a new puppy :). He is a labradoodle, and is 14 weeks. We brought him home on Tuesday, and he has had diarrhoea since, with a tiny bit of blood in.
I have been told this is normal for a new puppy who will be a bit stressed. He has been brought up in a kennel, so has been exposed to A LOT of new experiences, so understandably it is a bit stressful for him (although he is very laid back and coping very well).

I am just a bit concerned that he still has diarrhoea, and also fed up with clearing up poo, he is not house trained which is fine, but it is making it difficult to housetrain him.
W have an appointment on Monday to have him chipped, so I will ask then if he is the same, but is there anything I can give him, or do in the meantime.
Thanks
Should add, he is up to date with vacs, worming etc, I am very gradually changing his food over from the one he was getting already.

Personally given there is blood in the poop and its been going on this long I would get him to the vet now.
Normally I don't like to start a change if food for a new puppy for at least a week preferably 2 as they are all ready going through a huge change if place and new people, the less change for the first week or two I find the better.

Ditto about vets today if there is blood in the poo. He may have one of the poo bugs such as campylobacter or guardia these need treating by the vet ASAP. Check his gums for colour and capillary refill time to ensure he is not getting dehydrated. Ensure he has access to clean water at all time. Good luck

Vets immediately, apart from anything else, he could be dehydrated by now. What are you feeding him. Maybe chicken and rice till things settle?

Is blood in poo ever 'normal'?? I have never heard that. If it were me I would be taking a sample of poo with me on Monday if not today if poss. Make sure the pup is getting plenty of fluid as they can dehydrate quite quickly and seeing as this is at least the fourth day he has had it. Does it have what you would consider to be a normal poo smell?

As has been said vet today. I have never had a puppy with diarrhoea and it would worry me greatly, if there was blood in it I would be in a panic. It is not normal.

Hi all,
Was going to take advice on here, and take him to vets, but before I could he had a poo, no blood, and much more solid so I am not so worried. He is very lively, drinking loads, good capillary refill. Charging round like a loon at the mo,
Thanks everyone

I'd still take him to vets, nothing of what you have said is 'normal' (having the runs Tues-Sat, some with blood in) although I hope he continues to improve.
By what you say, I imagine he was bred for the Christmas market *sigh* so may not have had the best of starts.

Campylobacter presents with intermittent diarrhoea then semi solid poo. My puppy tiva had it at 9 weeks old and although I thought her lively and bouncy it was only once she had been treated I realised that she was not 100%. Take a stool sample to the vets and get her tested ASAP. Campylobacter needs antibiotics to treat it. Very common in dogs that live together and eat things such as others poo.
By the way tiva is now great and at 7 months old has qualified for crufts

if it was the breeder who told you that bloody diarrhoea is normal then that would ring all sorts of alarm bells. For peace of mind I would want the puppy seen by a vet even if he appears to be on the mend. Has the vet seen this puppy at all so far or were first jags and worming done by the ‘breeder’ ? Good luck :)

The breeder was recommended by two different vets, and she is a certified breeder (licensed by our county council?), I don't think he was bred for Xmas market, but maybe he was, the dates match I guess.
The vet we used to use for our last dog have already seen this puppy for his worming and injections, and have confirmed that the owner/breeder is very good.
It wasn't her who said puppies can have diarrhoea from stress, and poss bleed, it was someone else.
We have an appointment on mon for chipping and kennel cough as he will be attending puppy training so will speak to vet then.
Thanks again for advice.
