New reason to wear hi-viz out hacking.

A big thank you to the BHS who contacted the military and civilian helicopter pilots and made them aware of the problems that horse riders have with low flying helicopters and aircraft.

This resulted in the pilots being asked to watch out carefully for riders wearing hi-viz and take avoiding action to keep away from them.

Just for the record (as an ex driving instructor I'm 99% sure I've got the stats right!) it is 3 seconds earlier that you are seen when wearing hi viz.

A vehicle travels at 1.5 feet per second per mile an hour of speed, for example, a car travelling at 30mph x 1.5 = 45 feet per second. So in three seconds, 135feet. That means he sees you 135 feet earlier than if you weren't wering hi viz. Stopping distance at 30mph on a dry road is 75 feet (double it if the road is wet). Pretty much he should stop in time. At 60mph you'll been seen 270 feet earlier, stopping distance is 240 feet on a dry road.

Hi viz could save you and your horses life - why wouldn't you wear it?

Wow, a very good pilot then

I was riding a friends horse in a lesson once, in a sand school luckily and helicopter came right over her head. She freaked and galloped round the school, quite scary when you have only been riding about 5 months!
