New riding hat doesn't fit :(

I was soo excited cos I got a nearly new navy velvet riding hat off ebay for approximately half the retail price. I had measured my head to make sure I knew the right size to look for. The hat is supposedly the correct size.

But it doesn't fit. Its way too tight, presses on my temples painfully.

I'm just so annoyed! How the hell am I supposed to order the right size if the labelled size doesn't actually fit a head that size??!

Gah! Rant over.
 
To be fair, different makes do vary despite taking a correct measurement yourself, I'm afriad its more the case of only buy when you can try.

Unless of course you tend to buy the same make all the time so you are more familiar with there sizes and design etc.

Also I'd be very careful buying nearly new hats, you don't know how they have been stored or if they have been dropped, maybe its a good thing that it doesnt fit, thus making you buy a new one that does?
 
Agree with Kenzo 100% you really need to have a hat fitted correctly, even if it is the same make you used to have. I have had a champion classic for ages, got a new champion ventair and it is a larger size.
I would also be worried that in transport it might have been dropped/chucked about.

Try and resell on ebay/throw away then pop down your local tack shop. :)
 
Oh .... I can't believe i'm reading this.

I put my perfectly good looking riding hat in the bin last night ....all becuase I fell off my rearing horse on Monday and landed up in A&E.

Result = concussion - horrible headache & feeling sick for past 3 days.
Doctor told me without hat would have been = fractured skull & much worse headache!!!!

The hat looks fine - wouldn't know its been involved in a heavy fall .........

The horse ....... owned him 5 years, v.lazy, sensible as you like, never reared with a rider before, still not sure why he did it .......

Please please think about your safety, over saving a few quid on ebay on price of a hat.
 
Have to agree on different makes fitting differently. I ALWAYS wanted a Gatehouse Hickstead riding hat years ago but only ever could afford skull caps. When I had saved up enough for a velevt covered hat I was so excited and decided on the Gtehouse. I was soooooooooooo disappointed when I went to try it and it didn't fit. It just perched on top of my head. I was gutted! I ended up with a Champion Ventair and now I love it.
 
I have a stupid shaped head. I measure as 54cm but my new hat is 58cm. I bought a CO skull cap (one in my sig) a couple of years ago, and as you can see it perches and doesn't cover enough of my forehead. It was ordered online and I also masured my head, thought all was good, but it's not a good fit. So I decided it was time for an upgrade.

I finally took the plunge and splashed out on a CO Ayr8 riding hat. I went to the Robinsons megastore and tried several. Initially I had my heart set on a CO pro II skull, but it just didn't fit right. The Ayr8 fitted perfectly though, and so although I spent more than intended I finally have a perfect fitting hat.

I used it for the first time today, it was lush! It's so light, you don't even notice you are wearing it!

My advice would be always go for brand new and get an expert to fit it.
 
I got a new one from ebay couple of years ago, been wearing it happily until i decided to uprade it last week, I found then that it was a size too small, I agree get one fitted, so many shapes and sizes you cant just guess it

I completely second this. I recently fell off my very sensible mare on the road and landed on my head. So I had to replace my almost new hat. I tried several on in a well-known 'country store'. Several versions of the same size fitted completely differently. The only way to be sure a hat fits is to try it on.
Our RC will not accept adverts for 2nd hand hats in our newsletter because it is NOT safe.
