We took Chelsea (or Elsie as OH calls her as he refuses to call her Chelsea!) to the beach with the other dogs today.

She seemed to enjoy herself until she got a bit rough with the JRT who firmly put Elsie in her place :)

She even comes when called - most of the time!

Who couldn't love a face like that?:

She is such a lovely natured dog, the cat and chicken chasing is almost under control and it has if she has always been here with us. OH is a soft touch and allowed her to have the run of the hall, stairs, landing and our room at night and she tends to lay on the floor by my side of the bed. She did scare me half to death at 2.30 this morning though when I woke to find her staring at me intently, her face just a few inches from mine :D Bless her, she wanted to go out for a wee!

We were a bit doubtful as to whether we should get a 'replacement' (for want of a better term), for our lovely Lola, but Elsie is absolutely the perfect dog to fill Lola's shoes - Elsie is actually very like Lola in many ways, which has brought tears to my eyes several times over the last couple of days, but it is quite nice really :)

She is gawjus!! But then I am a sucker for a rott...then again I'm also a ridgey girl. She has certainly landed on her paws with you and it's nice to know you have managed to sort out any initial problems with the mogs. :) As for the dog breath during the night...Dex does the same thing followed by a hefty whack with his oversized paw if I feign sleep!! Sage shoves a wet nose in my face as she likes a midnight cuddle!!

What a lovely girl and she has made herself very much at home, so glad she has helped ease the heartache of losing Lola.

My Dobes have the disconcerting habit of staring at me when Im asleep, its nearly given me a heart attack, as Im so old I think they are checking Im still breathing.:D

Lovely pics. Can I ask one question though - how were you sure she would not beggar off? We are off to the beach tomorrow (mum dad, their two dogs and my new rescue -had her 4 weeks) and I would like to let her run off the lead as feel pretty safe at the beach - just have this underlying really fear she's going to disappear!!! She is pretty clingy until she spots something and fixates on it. I intend on taking bribes (toys/food etc) in the hope I can get her selective recall more on than off!!

Did you have any 'moments' with yours or is she pretty loyal?

Aww what a lovely girl, I'm a huge rottie person always wanted one after meeting my friends rottie in 07/08. sadly he was destroyed when he was three but i got my very own rottweiler for christmas 2010 and love him to bits!
He too does the 'right in your face intense look' but it's usually because he wants you to give him attention! :p:p:p

Thanks for all the lovely comments :) I was in tears over this dog this morning, she is so like our old Ridgeback Lola it is unreal, which is very bitter sweet. Elsie is fab though, we are lucky to have her :)

Her last owners said she had nil recall. We reckoned that on a long beach with us and her doggy sisters around she would stay around, even though she doesn't know us very well yet. There is also nowhere to go if she legged it on the beach but several miles of sand in either direction :) Elsie did spot a dog in the distance at one point and I could see her wondering whether to run after it so OH and I turned in the opposite direction and ran away calling her in silly high pitched voices. She decided to chase the lunatics running away from her rather than the strange dog :D :D :D There obviously comes a point when you have to let them off lead and cross fingers, so we thought the sooner the better, but did it in a place where she couldn't get into danger. Go for it, and take lots of photos :)

Ah right - yes i think I will be adopting the crazed running away whooping and calling if needs be! Think the fear comes from us losing a previous dog as her recall was very on and off and she'd just set off and run and that was that - she got lost so many times but sadly one time she set off from the stables and got run over. I don't ever want to go through that again!

I know this dog is not the same, she is much more people and dog orientated but I still keep thinking "what if?". Anyway, as you say, you have to take the plunge at some point and choose a suitable place. What with her and our old almost deaf dog (well, he's always had selective hearing so it's hard to tell how deaf he actually is!) it'll be a fun day!!! Lol.Think the other dog is going to think I'm a bit bonkers. I shall definitely take my camera!!

ladyt25 - don't know if this is any help, but we trained our spaniel that the first recall she did off the lead on every walk got a treat. Greedy b*gger was at your heels like a shot, and a few more recalls spread throughout the walk - some with treats, some not, would keep her on her toes :)

Thanks - yeah I try the food as she's reactive with dogs on the lead (and some people - more men than women) so i try that to distract her with that but it's v difficult as, although she's a pig in the house and will eat anything (loves cheese so i take chunks of cheese) once she's set on something it's v hard to get her attention back. Tried her on a walk off lead yesterday on a 'safe' mostly fenced in track and she's less reactive off lead. She is nervy though and ran up to a couple of people barking at them. Not the best. I know she won't do anything but they don't! i need her to be coming back. I think the beach will be different (hopefully) - she is actually more squeaky toy orientated so i have taken to using the squeaky ball and rewarding with this and/or food when she comes to me.

It makes me feel positive seeing this post - if that was a sog with nil recall then she's done very well so there's hope for me!!!

I think MrsElle's crazy running away trick may be put in to play - think MrsElle should have put a video of this on the thread though to show how it's done! ha ha

Hmmmm, now there's a thought - get OH to film me running up the beach waving my arms about wildly shouting 'Elsie, Elseeeeee' in a high pitched lunatic voice. I might send it off and get £250 from you've been framed. Or a visit from the men in white coats. :D :D :D

Unfortunately Elsie is neither food orientated or squeeky toy orientated, so they don't work for recall. She does, however, love balls. Unfortunately our other dogs don't, so we don't possess any! I will try to find a shop than sells balls tomorrow.
