Been having a clear out. Realised we have a number of rugs, all 6' 6", new, and in bags. The horse has been very gentle on his rugs over the past few years so ones we have bought "because he'll need a new one soon", have just sat around.
So I'm going to Rushden RC's tt sale on Sat. The big question is how to price them. How much would you expect to pay/would tempt you to buy at a sale. Going to sort them out and price them up this evening so all advice welcome.

Depending on what makes etc. Good makes i'd happily buy them second hand in good condition for 60% of the original price. I also know that Shires and cheaper makes can always be picked up mega cheap on robinsons website etc so i probs wouldnt buy one second hand unless it was really cheap - but then you may as well hold onto it x For a Rambo which was £250 originally i'd happily pay £180/200 for it in really good condition x I'd price them sensibly but be open to offers on them if you want to get rid of them x

As the sales will be on after Christmas I think 60-75% of the original value is about right, if you only reduce them a bit then people will think its easier to get them from a shop in the sale as they can return it if the fit isnt good or if there is any hidden damage/fault whereas they dont have any comeback if bought at a TT sale

The sale sounds interesting - I've found reference to the October sale online but not the Nov one, is this one the same basic info? Low Farm, start at 10am on Sat?

What sort of things are sold at these sorts of sales? is it more tack, rugs and clothes or are there usually stable tools and equipment too?

I think you will only get the sort of 60-70% price if they are not only unused but with bags and tags and are relatively recent designs. So maybe a rug design that is still going but in a colourway that is a couple of years old, and also from good in demand makes that people know and trust.

If the actual design of the rug has changed since you bought them or if they have lost their bags and tags then you will probably need to look at a lower price.

Also cheaper makes you will be less likely to get that % as they are easy to find on equestrian clearence etc.

You have to remember that people have no statutory rights/warranty etc when buying second hand in a private sale so they are putting themselves at a bigger risk.

In general I think if it was an expensive, good quality new rug I would pay a maximum of around 2/3 the original price.
If it was a cheap rug, I would expect to pay less than half the price - was going to buy a cheap rug, new, never used, off ebay the other day for £20. Found out I could buy it new online for £25 plus postage, so didn't bother as would rather pay a small ammount more with the guarantee that if it didnt fit I could return it, hence not wasting my money.
