new saddle feels perched.

As above - I am hoping it will bed in as i currently feel perched and the back of the saddle seemed to be slapping on poor ponys back.... I am booked in for a check in three months but would like to address this sooner rather than later.... do I need to put a backsaver or pad of some description under the saddle for now to protect his back... I have a HM backsaver, or a saddlecloth with shim pockets - feels like it needs lifting at the front and to sit more at the back...recommendations please.

Did you get it professionally fitted? If so, call the fitter straight away and tell them your concerns. You may be able to reject the sale if you have just bought it from the fitter and it is not suitable.

I would have them back immediately, doesn't sound like it has been fitted correctly first time round.

Sounds like it's too wide. Get the fitter back if applicable, or see if it can be adjusted. A pad or shims may well exacerbate that perched feeling.
