New size Equest pramox tube 750kg

I can understand this is a useful dose for larger horses but I would like to still be able to buy it in a 600kg dose as I am worming ned who weighs 450kg. At our yard we ended up using bits from multiple syringes to worm them all correctly, this involved decanting some from one tube into the other.....arrgh. I suspect in some yards there will be as much likelihood of under dosing as overdosing especially if peeps are trying to dose 2 ponies and they don't fancy opening another 750kg tube to just remove 50kgs worth. Would like to know what others think?

I realise that I bought plain Equest, not Pramox, as I worm them for tapeworm separately, and Equest is still available in 575kg size. I can only see the 700kg size listed for Pramox. Maybe they are phasing out the smaller size of Pramox, though they still had it there a few weeks ago.
 
Greens country store sell both sizes and a wide range of other wormers, they are very reasonable and mail order is easy with just a few questions. I've used greens for about 4 years with excellent service.

I always try and go slightly over, there is no way you can be absolutely accurate unless the horse is weighed on a weighbridge before worming, relying on weigh tapes that are far from accurate could mean under dosing which is more of an issue.
I just checked my horse on the weigh tape to see how far out it is and by my guesswork it is easily 50kg too low he was weighed a while ago when he was at about his lowest at 562kg, the weigh tape puts him at 540kg but he has put on about 30kgs since he was weighed I gave him a 600kg dose of wormer.

Really, how does that work then? That's not what I've been led to believe as it is underdosing that doesn't quite kill the worm which then recovers and develops resistance to the chemicals.

You are confusing dosing too often with dosing once with too little. Dosing with too little causes resistance. So does overuse unless you manage to kill every last worm and egg.
 
The standard size tubes are older stock and are being replaced with the bigger tubes, once gone there will be no more as they aren't made anymore.
Resistance is a big problem and all to often we hear " oh it's ok I will make this tube do both" the bigger tubes are a god send to us who train and sell them and have been made to try and cut down some of the resistance
 
Under dosing is probably the biggest driver of the evolution of resistance in worm populations.

Overdosing does not increase the incidence of resistance and is far more preferable.

Thanks for replies. Over dosing does not cause resistance. The chemical has a very wide safety margin. It is under dosing where the danger lies and most definitely does add to resistance issues.
 
Liking the new bigger tube but as an owner of a 17.1 ID that tops the scale over 800kg.... would like them a little bigger still but we are getting closer!

In agreement that overdosing does not causing dosing resistance. Under dosing and inappropriate worming are more of a problem for worm resistance than over dosing.

My big lad was 775kg when weighed and working. Now he's retired I suspect he is more, so the 2 larger tubes do my two nicely as he gets the bit left over from my other horse.
