After years of longing and waiting i am finally in the process of having stables in our field for the first time ever!! Normally we get so wet during the winter i have to move them elsewhere for winter grazing, my welsh D drops loads of weight so he really needs to be kept in at night times when its cold.
So i have a hard standing, 2 stables and a field shelter (all in one) I have ordered stables matts for them as its directly onto the hardcore (on skids anchored down) the plan is to use the 1 stable for the welsh and the other stable as a store for hay and feed etc and the centre open as a field shelter with a gate which can enclose my (other) cob if needed.
Bedding wise i am thinking of using shavings - something thats not going to cause a massive muck heap! Just looking at getting a few bits ordered and trying to think of stuff which will come in handy. So far i have thought of the following:

**Battery powered lights (no electric) - i used to have a light socket thing with crocodile clips to attach to a small battery, after a couple of these again!
**Rug rail - to hang in the storage room for wet rugs to dry out if needed
**Mucking out tools - shavings fork, brush, etc
**Hay nets and buckets i already have
I have feed bins and fixtures all ready in my little shed which i am keeping for none feed and hay items

If anyone has any other tips or bits hat would be useful that would be fab! thank you

I'd actually use the field shelter for storage and just leave the stable doors open for the horses to use. Sling the bed up during the day so less mucking out.

Personally I would use field shelter as storage, and use the stables as and when needed to either shut in at night/wetter days or leave open on the dryer days, while you have them, it is best to leave the stables as stables incase of emergency, you never know when you might need them

Its actually 2 stables that open up opposite each other with a shelter in the middle if that makes sense?! so its 36ft long sectioned into 3 12 x 12 parts, the 2 end ones are stables with doors, the middle section has no door or panels its a sort of stable in the middle but open at the front! The plan is one of the end ones will be storage and the middle will be the shelter bit - it also has a gate on the front which my OH will clad out with kick boards and will be mostly pinned open except if i need to keep them both in for any reason then it can double up as a stable too. They also have a hard cored area just outside the stables which will be post and railed with a gate at one end opening out to their field which i have halved so approx 2 acres to graze on - the land is clay so its normally wet wet wet! hoping to savour it with the stables so when its heavy rain in the winter i will enclose them in on the hardcore with hay, when its nice they can go out on the field with hay. The rest of the field (appox 1.5 acres) will section off, most of this is exceptionally wet during winter so this will be saved for spring. Planning on keeping the D in at night, TBH they both quite like being stabled - the cob will have the option of the shelter if she wants it but will be penned in during the night on the hardcore bit!
