Hi everyone!

Following up from my previous thread, the price of building block stables has come in at roughly (still waiting for roof man to confirm) €21k, this is for three 4m x 4.5m stables.

So I also received a quote for timber stables, same size, also with windows, metal framed windows and doors, apex roof, €11k.

What do you lovely people think, is it worth 10k to get block built? Everyone says yes, but obviously that 10k could be well used on fencing and surfacing a loafing area. Which will have to wait otherwise 🤔

Timber stables get very hot in the summer - we had to take several of ours down as they were in direct sunlight and unusable in hot weather. The ones with tree shade as not too bad but our block ones with a tiled roof are lovely - worth every penny if youplan on staying in the same place.

The price for wood seems too low IMO. The price of materials has risen sharply (again) recently.

Concrete went up 5% from most of our suppliers at the start of the month too.

We have wood and they’re fine, block would be better but they do a job. Cost more than £10k about 5 years ago.

€21K for block built comes as a surprise! I was quoted €50K for three 14x14 ft stables.

Would absolutely go for block over wooden though.

I would have loved stone stables but mine live out 24/7 in summer so I couldn’t justify it when the only real benefit to me would have been how they looked as I wasn’t really concerned about them getting hot as they aren’t in anyway.

Oh really? That's direct labour if you know what I mean, a friend of mine can do the groundwork and foundation. Now depending on price of the roof it could be a bit more. I also looked at steel buildings but they come in as expensive really, although I do like them also.

Block every time! As others have said wooden ones get so hot in summer unless very shaded and the maintenance etc of keeping wood going is a pain, eventually they will rot in places so depends how long you intend on keeping them/ if you can can afford it get block!

Also much harder for rats and mice to take up residence in block stables....
(also wasps nests have often been present in wooden stables at livery yards I've been in but I never had a wasp problem in my concrete block stables).

Additionally if you put a metal sheet roof on the block stables your risk of destruction by fire is almost nil.

Ahh that would be the difference then! My quote was for a builder to do everything.

In the end I went for steel (€22K + concrete) and I love them. The ventilation is excellent. Small photo if you’re curious.

Definitely block over wood. One of the perks of our DIY yard was somehow managing to get allocated a separate pair of 100 year old huge brick stables with a high tile roof - beautifully cool in summer, and have open windows as well as doors so ventilation great for COPD coblet.

Brick is even better than block.
