So i have taken two wonderful hairy, unrugged, field kept ILPH horses on loan. I have designed a yard where they can be kept in a fenced off yard with stable door open at night and then out in field during the day - this is to preserve grass.
Now baring in mind said horses have never been stabled - guess what? Kite has decided its rather nice being in a stable and spends her whole night in there! Who says horses aren't clever!

Now means i have a yard to muck pick in the morning AND a stable!!! I love them both though..

I got a welsh mountain companion for my horse year before last. He hasn't been stabled before (and when he was it was a barn arrangement where they all got herded in then he got the s**t kicked out of his knee rendering him useless but that's another story!). He was v suspicious of the whole stable thing at first but now loves it.. loves lying down resting his achy old knee, when its raining hard I leave my other horse in and Connies door open onto the yard but he usually just stands in his stable, pony heaven!! As you say, they aren't daft!

I bought my mare out of a field when she was 2 - she was born on a hill and lived there with little shelter until I bought her. Her first winter I got her one thin rug to keep the rain off (she wasnt clipped) but one month in she had a wardrobe full - she loved being pampered soooo much (still does) - she makes pillows in her bedding when she lies down to sleep, she puts herself to bed...
