Hi after years of Welshs I have taken the plunge and just bought myself an 8yrs old TB raced till 4 then been in light work, hacks and few SJ shows and a bit of xc schooling . His temperament seems fairly quiet not too whizzy. I will be looking to get him fit through hacking and schooling and start on some XC training myself. He currently has quite a covering of meat for a TB :) so don't really want to be overly feeding him until his work load gets more I guess. His old owner says his feet are typical tb so would like something to help with that but also something to maintain his gut and bones. Any other suggestions etc will be more than grateful :)

hiya, this is what I had mine on,
Dodson Horrell, safe and sound,
Formula for feet supplement,
Pink Powder
And some succulents.
In winter I changed safe and sound for pasture mix, he looked gorgeous, but I wouldnt waste the money of anything but biotin for feet, it cost me about *£50 every month for formula for feet, and I never saw a bit of improvent.

I have two on Thunderbrook Base mix. I cup per day, with a little grass chaff. Everything they need is there and they are looking good.

Mine was sensitive to sugar and alfafa. After quite a bit of experimenting I found unmollassed sugarbeat and micronised linseed were amazing for him. In terms of supplements he had Pro Hoof from Progressive Earth and Yeasacc to support gut function. Most importantly ad lib hay. He looked amazing on that combo and went from. Dreadful feet to rock crunching barefoot :)

Mine has spillers high fibre cubes and pro balance, and ad lib hay. She looks fantastic and is barefoot. Not sure what typical TB feet are?

Feed plenty oil in his feed!!! corn oil is fab!!!!! £1.80 for a litre from most supermarkets. big splash am and evening feeds!!! Alfabeet soaked with chaff good feed AVOID corn /cereal feed, these are not good feeds for the gut these feeds are avoided for anything prone or had ulcers. Thunderbrook base mix is good or look at there individual herbs!! xx

Brewers yeast which is the base for Pink Powder; it aids digestion and at the same time is excellent for skin and hoof condition (so will help for shoes) and micronized linseed. Soaked oats are good for weight too and don't make them fizzy, it's usually barley that does that!

If he's got poor feet then no crap basically! No molasses, low in starch and sugar and balanced minerals. Mine (barefoot) gets speedibeet, micronised linseed, whole soaked oats, mag ox, salt and a min/vit supp.

Top spec balancer, best thing ive had. I use the comprehensive for winter and lite for summer. Has biotin in too to help the hooves, otherwise kevin bacon's hoof dressing is great all year, especially summer, really stops them cracking. I also use simple system lucie pellets, alfa a molasses free and linseed/speedibeet if i need extra in winter. ad lib hay really helps keep the weight on to.

Mine has been much easier to feed since I started giving him linseed. I have a pony x with cushings and my 7/8ths TB both on speedibeet, molasses free chaff and Formula 4 Feet, and the only extra my TB needs is ad-lib hay and a mug of linseed. IME the more simple the diet, for any horse TB or pony, the easier it is! Start with the basics (especially if he's already looking good) and work from there :)

Alpha a oil
Oats
Yea sacc & peppermint (for digestion)
MSM for legs (had injuries to daren't take him off!)
Seaweed (gen supp)
Micronized linseed (wonder food, condition, feet, coat, hooves everything)

Mine has the above, he is sensitive to sugar/starch mixes and mag ox send him loopy, but this seems to work esp as he isn't a very good do-er and cribs
