Hello there,

I am soon to be starting riding lessons but as i am saving up for a lot of domestic things too I am wondering how I can get experienced in horse riding along with lessons? I live in Aberdeen currently and am wondering whether horse owners would be interested in having someone exercise their horse sometimes for free? or for a relatively low price? Perhaps in exchange for some mucking out and other work with the horse too ?

And if so where would i advertise this?
I have been boarding at a agricultural college for the last two years doing a National Diploma In Animal Management so although I have a lot of experience with animals including horses I do not have a lot of experience riding. Could anyone give me any hints and tips for perfecting my riding ?? Thanks I would appreciate any feedback

Carly

Hello welcome to aberdeen
i understand your predicament with the expensive riding lessons as they are pricey and helping other people with their horses is something that i do however i have been riding for many years and i am not sure many people would want a complete beginner exercising their horses especially without supervision, i also think you'd be very hard pressed in the current climate to find someone to pay you for the privelege. That said there is a lot of general experience to be gained from friends with horses although understand there will be no tuition so what happens when something you haven't experienced happens? Or you do something you haven't been taught to do, i am not sure many people would be comfortable with you 'trying things out' with their horses Many people who have only riding riding school horses in a safe environment do not realise how different this is to riding a non riding school horse.
Anyway that is just my 2 sense i wish you luck with your horsey quest but please consider your safety and the horses with regards to your competence. So if you did want to put yourself out there please highlight the fact you are a beginner so only people with suitable horses need reply, lots of horsey people i know use gumtree.

Tbh, if you are as beginner as you come across (I might be wrong!!!) I would just concentrate on trying to get proper lessons for now, and maybe when you're a bit more experienced try to find a horse to ride.

I don't wish to be mean, but if you are as novice a u sound, what happens when someones horse is difficult etc when they're not around??? You won't know how to react/ what to do to keep you and the horse safe.

I know that i would not be willing to let a complete beginner on one of my horses, especially unsupervised, and if you advertise I would make it abundantly clear exactly what u have/ haven't done with horses.

If you're looking for a good riding school, I would recommend oldfold farm (aberdeen rising club) as opposed to hayfield- the tuition is much better and you might learn something.

Good luck, I'm sorry if I have come across harshly, but I do think you need to bee realistic about this.
