Hello all,

I am new in the horse world and would want to know what I can expect.
Therefore the question, what are your top daily frustrations?
And what keeps you awake at night?

Thanks for your help :)

Depends if you mean as a rider (ie, with riding school horses) or as an owner.

The former - nothing really kept me awake, I was often frustrated with myself for not progressing as fast as I'd like.

As an owner - so many things it's difficult to know where to start! Some would say that frustrations as an owner are different depending on whether you have horses at a livery yard or on your own premises.
Overall, I spend quite a lot of time worrying about things that 'might' happen - like running out of hay, or one of the horses developing a physical problem (especially if it's hard to diagnose).

I still love them though and don't regret choosing this way of life. And there are plenty of days when things are so good we declare that it's all worth it.

You can expect to have the most amazing bond with a special animal who then becomes your best friend but is also an overgrown suicidal hamster 🤣

You will become a paranoid wreck every time your horse coughs or looks off 🤣🤣.
You will always be skint 🤣
But you will never be sad! Ive never seen a sad person on horse back! Its the best therapy..

But apart from that, I absolutely love the bones of my horse and he feels the same and I would do anything for him.

Currently lack of rain/grass and what the reduced yields everyone is reporting will mean for hay/feed costs this winter.

In the grand scheme of things we’re relatively lucky as we have 3 and a pony at home on 9 acres, but it still stresses me to look out and see parched paddocks of brown right now.

I am sending rain to you, we have had it for 4 days straight 🤣🤣🤣

Not really having control when you are on livery- no matter what level of livery you pay for. Over the years I've found that many yard owners/managers have a very strange relationship with the truth and most seem to suffer from appalling memory problem - what you asked for, and they agreed to, when you viewed will be forgotten when you're unloading your horse at their yard.

Worry about sourcing good hay/straw this winter/whether the fields will ever dry out
The usual "what the hell are they up to now"

If I still had a riding horse and kept them at a livery yard it would be injury, hard ground/mud, compromise, traffic, affordability.

What doesn’t frustrate me daily and/or keep me awake at night! I spend so many nights lying awake worrying over one of them for one reason or another! 😂
