I am 16 years old and have never thought about showing as I love happy hacking and generally keeping them as pets plus I am quite shy haha! I got my now rising two year old cob filly that I've had from a foal who I now want to show. As I have never shown before I don't have a clue what's what! Can you guys help me with these questions? (By the way, it's only a local show so nothing big, I'm going for the experience for myself and my filly as it's new to use both)

1) What should I wear for inhand showing?

2) Does the horse have to have a bridle and be bitted? (I haven't bit her yet due to her age)

3) Can you use webbed bridles as I have both leather and webbed but I prefer webbed.

4) Can you use the reins to control the horse
or must you have inhand reins?

Thank you in advance :)

Here is a site that I found very helpful! http://www.basic-horse-care.com/showing/in-hand-showing/
If she isn't bitted then you can use an in-hand non bitted bridle- obviously because there is no bit you can't use regular reins :) Here's an example

Use a leather bridle over a webbed one! The point of showing is to show off your horse, and a leather bridle looks more presentable than a webbed one!

Good Luck! If you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask!

For in hand, smart trousers or cords that are the opposite shade to your horses legs, so if horses legs are white then wear dark colour and vice versa. A shirt and tie always looks smart with a tweed jacket or a smart waistcoat. Sensible shoes which you can run in, you can't go wrong with brown joddy boots. Hair tied back and if wearing a hat then hair net as well. No jewellery (apart from small studs in ears allowed) Dark leather gloves look smart but don't have to wear them. Also, a short brown whip (leather looks best!)

You don't have to worry about a bit for a mare in hand so a halter would be fine, make sure it compliments her face, usually with cobs something with a wider nose band makes them look smart!

I'm not sure i understand question 4, if she's in a halter with no bit then it's just one lead under her chin. If she does wear a bit, then the reins are passed over the head and held underneath the head.

Overall image should be smart and workman like.

Hope that helps, good luck and have fun!
