Im so happy i found this sight!!!

I purchased my horse Dec 26, 2010. he was 350lbs under weight, he is missing his front teeth, he had proud flesh on his back leg, and the guy told me he had a vet out to tell his age and he "said" 6-10 y/o .. He was in pretty bad shape.

My vet came out and said he was about 15 y/o

My question is What is another way i can put weight onto him and exercises to help build muscle up?

Hes being fed 3x's a day grass x alf alfa, and 2 kinds of grain equine senior and healthy edge with amplify.

These are of when i first got him

That's better , Wow , you've had your work cut out , but he's looking so much better. He still lacks topline and as he's missing his front teeth i'm guessing that he doesn't eat as much as he should do. I take it you are in a different country to me , so feed advice could be a bit hard , but as much forage as he'll eat and also some sort of conditioning mix would work , you are probably doing that anyway , even a feed balancer like blue chip would be good. Plenty of slow riding would be better than fast work , a good brisk hack up some hills would be good , but don't over-do it as you don't want to be losing condition through too much hard work. He looks like a real character! re-gaining condition is always a long game and is better done over time , there's never a quick fix but I bet in 12 months time he'll be a different horse again..

Hello and welcome :)

You're lad is lovely, but I would try and get more weight on him before you ride him any more - he's still too underweight imho :(

Hes put on alot of weight since i got him... but hopefully over time you wont be able to see his ribs.. i was told he wont re gain the muscle in his back end or in his hips.. is this true??

im going to see him today, he has an appointment with the farrier, ill get better pictures of him now.

I didnt start riding him until march. the picture of him saddled up we walked around the arena to see how he did with a saddle on him..

I am happy i saved him from the Retard who owned him before that didnt take care of him and was gonna send him off to slaughter.

who throws 2 round bales to 30 head of horse and expect them to be healthy?

I too would say he is still too thin to be ridden. Id be taking for lots of inhand hacks up hills ect to build his muscle and just keep feeding him as much as you can as he wont be getting much grass/hay with no front teeth

saying that he is looking better, but you wont be able to get the muscle till he has more weight on him as everytime you work him he has no fat to burn...only muscle which he doesnt have either so he wont improve.

he has 3 front teeth on his right side of his mouth.. He eats his 3 troughs of hay he gets every day.. but grain is the problem, it spills out of his mouth when he trys to eat it

Can you get a good dentist to come and advise you on his teeth? Failing that, your vet should be able to help, I bet once his teeth are sorted, and he can eat better, the weight will pile on.

Good luck!

OP.. your not in the uk are you?

I presume all you can feed is straight grains and cerals? try soaking them and making them into a mash, and get a very good multi vitamin supplement for him.

yoo hoo*waves *** welcome hun - ok you youre doing ok with your rather nice horse - like all have said he still needs to build some weight but mmm such a difference from when you got him - he needs fibre hay or in form of feed - horses are trickle feeders so a slow steady amount - they graze for 16hrs(approx of course) a day so try and allow that. quiet romps in hand will allow him to build muscle and also allow you to buils a bond - let him graze in hand and just stand with him . he has teeth probs ok but not end of world hun - find good dentist vet and feed to his teeth - remember this site is a great place to ask ( beware the trolls lol ) but get on here and ask questions so so many good nice ppl ready to help :)
