Just got my 2yo Trakehner home and had him cut, I've read some books but would welcome any tips or advice anyone may have to make the next few months... and years enjoyable!
Welcome to HHO Bert'n'Berg and congratulations on your new boy. If you can find someone experienced with youngsters to work with you both for a while that would be something to consider. Most importantly IMHO is to ensure that you work in a calm and consistent manner with him, and that you very early on establish the ground rules regarding personal space.
With him being young I wouldn't be in too much of a rush to do much with him, just get him used to enjoying being with people, have his feet done, be groomed, let you touch him all over, tie up etc. And lots and lots of turnout with companions to let him be a horse and learn herd behaviour.
You will have lots of fun with him, look forward to hearing how things go.
Send him back!!
Am joking they are fantastic so rewarding but there is a lot of work to put in. I agree with ISHmad consistancy and ground work. My 2yo go through very clear stages of behave or not behave!!
Is is either so loving and rewarding and i think wow we are making real progress then crash!! He is one again and the last 10 months of work has been forgotten!!!
But I wouldnt swap him for the world I love him to bits!!
Owning a full Trak & a part bred, I would suggest you find yourself a very experienced person to help you if you are new to youngsters.
They can become the nicest, most intelligent animal or a sharp monster.
Traks are very sensitive in general and there's a saying that you can never make them do what they dont want, they have to agree to it first.
I wish you all the luck, but they can be very difficult to handle and bring on if started badly (not implying you will). They have a lot of good traits but they can be hotter than your average TB just out of training.
agree with the post above. having worked a year at one of the traks studs, the youngsters are generally fine but they can be sharp and wont be afraid to put up an arguement. out of interest, who is your youngster by?
