Hi,

I have just bought an ifor 505, (older model) and its my first trailer.
Advice needed please!!!!

What sort of insurance would you recommend?
And security devices, hitch lock?wheel lock etc?

Any advice on anything would be very grateful!!

Thanks!

We have a hitchlock and a wheel lock. Our trailer is also parked in a locked yard in a place thats difficult to get out of quickly. Hubby puts the lock on the rear wheels as if you locked the front wheel it can be jacked up and still towed away. We insure it with the company that does the horses - they usually tell you what locks it needs on it for the insurance to be valid. When we first bought it brand new the local postman told us loads had been stolen locally. We were so paranoid we took two wheels off when it was parked up! We soon got bored of that one!

Make sure you have spare keys for the locks - they always go missing..

Another thing to think about is rescue cover if you are going long distances..

Enjoy your trailer!

In addition to hitch lock and wheel lock, you might want to think about getting some graphics put onto the trailer - they're not that expensive and make it much less attractive to thieves as it's more difficult for them to get rid of it. Even if they remove the graphics, the paint underneath won't have faded to the extent of the paint around it which again, makes it harder to pass along.

Have the post code put on the roof in very large lettering. Keep a note of the unique trailer number on the body plate just in case it gets stolen
Remove the wheels if not being used for long periods of time to avoid it being stolen.
Also ensure that the trailer has trailer tyres fitted to it and not car tyres as car tyres are not designed to take the weight.

Can I ask how much, ball park, insurance is? I'm about to buy a trailer and I'm not really sure it's going to be worth it for the money I'm going to be spending?

Agree with all the others also permanent mark it where it can't be seen normally like under the mats, behind the light fitting; we've also marked it behind the number plate; only places you know about; take pics of the marks too for your records.

I got my new trailer added to my jeep insurance for no extra cost! So it's worth contacting your car insurance people. Insured when towing 3rd party and also comprehensive ins when parked up.

Don't forget breakdown cover as well.

My trailer costs about £90 to insure and another £45 for full breakdown and recovery.

As others have said, a really good wheel clamp in the back wheel and a tow hitch lock are usually required by your insurer.

Where we keep our trailers in a locked compound we have a security post which is in the shape of a upside down L. It fits over the A bar and locks into the ground, hard to describe but its a kind of metal flap which is padlocked to the anchor point in the ground which is concreted. It stops the A bar being lifted.

The trailer I use is insured with my Horse Insurance Policy which is through NFU. The RAC do RAC Trailer Assist which is a very good service, £45 for the year and they recover you and your horse(s) if they cant get you going. Vital if you get stuck on a Motorway..!
