Well, little Eric had his operation on Wednesday. The vet said his aorta is the wrong way round and she found a little hole in his heart that she wasnt too concerned with but she managed to improve the oespohagus and remove the loop that was interfering with his digestion.

So, £4000 later (credit card), my parents now have their sixth dog and he is recovering well, he is bright and playing with the others already.

My mum would have had him put down I think but Dad and little sister would never have allowed it. The vet thinks he has a 90% chance of living well into adulthood but said he would be unlikely to make it past 8 or 9.

So, here's hoping that he continues to get better. Thanks to all who gave advice :o

Thanks both, he is still on liquidised food as that stays down no problem. Over the next few weeks they will give him less liquid and revert slowly back to solid food and see how he goes. In theory he should be able to eat solid food and it stay down within a month or so... :)

Tought I would pop back and give an update on the very poorly puppy that most people, including me, thought we should probably have out down at 8 weeks old. Well, we had the op and he cost us about 5 grand in all but it was worth it :D

Here he is with his Daddy!

He is doing really well, now almost on solid food and is as happy as larry. Currently to be found digging up all of the newly planted plants :)

Aw bless him. He looks lovely and well done you for giving him the chance. You'll be rewarded many times over I'm sure over the coming years.

A megaeasphogus puppy then. There is a fantastic group on FB about this illness/disease regarding how best to feed them etc. many vets do not have a great understanding of this illness/disease and normally suggest pts due to the amount of care the dog will need for the rest of its life.

I had my last litter of puppies ever and will never breed again due to this awful illness/disease. We had one pup that wasn't gaining weight and as soon as solid food is introduced to them during weaning this is when the problems crop up. She was pts, another pup from the litter developed symptoms at approx 9months old and was pts (before the new owners contacted us - had the let us know beforehand, then I would have refunded the puppy and kept her on and dealt with it correctly). And a 3rd pup has the same but her owner has a fantastic vet who understands the illness/disease and they have developed a programme for her to live her life to the full with her older sibling.
I hope the pup is ok , but I doubt it will be able to eat solid foods properly with risking a regurge episode and then possible regurge pneumonia occurring from it also. However if the vet has done a great job on the surgery, then you may be ok on slightl more firm food than some can cope with.

I am so pleased your family have given the pup a chance, but it isn't an easy one to deal with long term if any of the symptoms persist into later life :-(
Check out canine megaeasphogus on FB if you need any help at all. Great group of people all dealing with the same issues :-)
