Hi
I've just moved to a new yard at the weekend and my normally calm gelding has become an anxious bag of nerves. After a fairly stressful loading we eventually made it to the new yard where he is turned out with a new friend and where he can see other horses in other paddocks. His new friend doesn't give him the time of day, but if my boy becomes separated from him he loses the plot. I know it is still early days but any suggestion? I am at livery so can't pick and chose where/who he is turned out with. I have been recommended rescue remedy but dont imagine this is much use if i put it in his breakfast and his friend is brought in in the afternoon without him.
He is used to being turned out by himself and having other horses taken away and it has never been a problem before.
Help!

Time. He just needs to adjust to his new routine.

Mine usually take one to two weeks to adapt to a change.

I NEVER turn a new horse out with existing horses ( speaking from experience my mare ended up with shattered splint bone 19 pieces )
try some magic calmer

Well you would certainly hope that he will be turned out with the same horses consistently.

It's also a big ask to expect him to be settled in the field on his own - on the new yard.

All new horses here go in a field beside the group field so they can talk and squeal and kick out while greeting without actually making contact with the new one, nor can can they gang up on new one corner him etc. We cut down the risk of serious injury by 3/4% by doing it this way we only get to see a odd surface scratch, we have horses on both sides so new horse is not isolated away from pack.

I have seen too many horses being turned out into existing group in the past years and know at least 4 whose broken legs due to kicks and horse PTS or horse driven through fence.I will not be responsible for any new horse going through this or what I went through with Diamond and nearly lost her. We currently have a new mare that's going through the 1st week actually in the field with the others after the week on own, she hasn't been accepted yet but there is general piece in the group.

He is turned out with the same horse, not on his own, but was suggesting I couldnt move him to a different paddock to break the attachment as it's not my yard.

It has nothing to do with attachment - it's about security.

Ask to turn him out in a bigger herd.
