New Year's Honours List: HHO style?

HHOers who stand out for me:

Baydale - goes without saying
Charliemouse - courage over adversity  :D
Only_me and KirstyHen - I have huge admiration for the way they are bringing on their talented babies
Kerilli - endless amounts of hugely relevant and well thought out advice, freely given :)

Excellent, everyone is feeling soppy.

In the Soldiering On list, I'd like to add Puppy, whom I do not know and have never "talked" to in any context but whose post-kick photos still make me feel ill and whose experience should serve as a reminder that there is never a reason to take risks just because other people, not in the line of fire, tell you it will be fine.

The literally kicked in the face and still bouncing back award would have to go to Charlimouse who seems to have spent more time in hospital than on her horses. I enjoy her reports and hope she keeps reporting all the ups and downs that we all go through with horses.

Aww thank you! Glad you enjoy my waffle, although i'm hoping 2012 is going to be a little less eventful !

For me, any person who has the dedication to care for and train a horse deserves a huge pat on the back! It is a special breed of person that can be lying in the mud, with their horse high tailing it home, meerly regarding what a good 'learning' experiance they have just had ! Having said that I do think Baydale has super human powers :p!

One last vote for friends, whether in real life or cyberspace, and the power they have through support, advice, shoulders to cry on or butt-kicking. I know HHO isn't always a rosy and sunny place to be but I've met some fantastic people through it, so thanks to H&H for providing us with a platform for our pony-filled musings. :D

Crikey, you're even soppier than the rest of us! Give that girl a strong coffee to balance out the gin, fgs.
I'll second the suggestion of Johanna Vardon, a hugely undervalued heroine of the breeding world - I needed her advice years ago for 1 i was fostering for a friend, and she was an endless fount of wisdom & help in spite of being in bed with hideous 'flu, and helped me to make a very happy ending for mare and foal.
also Puppy, who I've been lucky enough to meet and she's lovely. She's another who's brilliant at soldiering on and on in spite of extreme adversity. hope her new dun pony proves a superstar.
thanks rhino, jeez, wasn't expecting that. just trying to prevent other people making some of the heinous mistakes i made along the road...

No, it's far more than that K (or certainly appears so to me, and others I'm sure). You must spend an extraordinary amount of time thinking out constructive, empathetic replies for people, whatever level they are training and competing at.

It is this attitude that really sums up the 'community feeling' behind eventing :)

Ditto this K :D

And, for me, for all the kind help and support from people such as K, Alwaysbroke, Coss, TarrSteps, Pippipony, Nailed, Mik - and many, many others.

A big Thank You for all your help and support.

ha, i do a lot of thinking when i'm mucking out, and this is a perfect outlet!
i do agree about the 'community feeling' though, hope it's still there across the entire sport, i certainly benefitted hugely from it when I was utterly clueless but brave and keen (dodgy combination!) ;) ;)

I raise a glass of champers to Baydale as well. I would also like to add that Baydale has the most impressively packed car I have seen in 2011 with a bottle of pimms, lemonade and glasses at the ready! She also does a good line in family avoidance when I managed to be late back to the outlaws following a foal cuddling session.

In terms of HHOs - Baydale without a doubt. Plus Charlimouse and Sarah Jane for remaining so positive.

I'm not quite sure what Mary King needs to actually DO to get some honours award, anyone know?!

Oh I would ditto that, I was the same, keen and clueless, and really lucky to be surrounded by excellent people who literally stopped me from killing myself riding any horse thrown in my direction!

HHO - Baydale, Puppy and Rosiefan's Rosie. All wonderful examples of getting back on the horse (literally).

Rosiefan - Rosie's pretty famous these days, I hear she's the success story of the year out of that Addies department and much talked about as the outcome of choice for new admissions ;)

Horsewise - Kauto Star. And Monet's Garden for surviving and for being such a huge pleasure to watch all these years.

What a lovely thing to hear, thank you. Thrilled if she's giving others hope for the future when they are feeling so very lost and frightened.

I'd like to nominate my horse, for inspiring me everyday (how's that for soppy :p)

And in a major cop out as there are far too many to mention, the whole of CR, yes there are bumpy bits, but when it's good this place is a wealth of information, help, and you always put up with my OTT Mally posts :D

TarrSteps gets a special mention for all the gems she dishes out on a daily basis (free of charge!) and although they don't post much and it's going back a couple of years now, TableDancer and Chatter1 - Burgie was a turning point for me, it really made me want to event properly and you both were super encouraging and welcoming. Plus I wouldn't know which end to shovel feed into if it weren't for Chatter1!! :D

Wow!! I didn't realise how soft everyone got at the turn of the new year!!! :P oh, and I LOVE the group rave- thanks MrsM!!

I'd agree with all the above, and also add a couple more. I won't name names as some are personal etc. but there are a few people I can think of who deserve a glass or two who have had a rough year, divorce and relationship wise. Battling on with work, trying to ride your baby horses, mucking out through winter is tough enough without knowing that through the kitchen door is a whole load of mess that can't just be chucked in a wheelbarrow, spread on a field or burnt in a skip.

So, join me in a glass of champagne- and what on EARTH is this PINK wine you speak of? !! Wine comes in one variety in my house- "copious".

For me the 2011 honours should go to chatter1. Literally the only person (including me!) who had any faith I could not only ride my horse but also do it well enough to bring home posies, regularly enough for it not to be a fluke. This time last year I could not get said horse over a 70cm oxer, had failed to sell it and was pretty much convinced of my own hopelessness and that I should give up eventing.

She patiently stood there in some foul weather, occasionally whilst ill, refused to accept my whining about not being able to do it, and generally has made me into a much better rider.

In 5 years of eventing before I started training with her I had won 1 rosette for coming 9th in an intro where half the rest of the class had drama XC. I had never jumped a DC. This year I've run 16 times, been placed 9 and jumped many many DCs. I've even come 2nd in a BE90 open and a BE100 open. I've jumped the horse round a course of fences at 1.20, without making a hash of it and leaving them all up.

So at midnight I shall be raising my glass to her - I think I'd have given up without her help this year.

I agree with this too! :D

I think now I have to mention MrsM for her group rave! Fab!

Off HHO, I have to raise a glass to my friend and RI who has kicked my arse to the curb a few times when I felt like I just *couldn't* do something and she's not only told me I could, but proved it. and to my fabby Sammy. And certainly another dear friend, off list and often quietly doing away in the background is my friend who has been an RDA instructor for more than 25 years.

Agree wholeheartedly about the British Dressage Team (wow, what an inspiration!). Also really inspired by Mary King, Mark todd, WFP.

To be honest, I never expected this thread to run like it has, and I'm chuffed to bits reading all the responses. Some of the people mentioned I don't know and I don't know the references. Some I do. But the one thing it has done is bring back some nice memories (and not just for me, by the reading of it all). Thanks so much - and Happy New year!
