New Zealand lies

Sorry in advance I just need to sound off! I have just found out a relative of mine who is currently living in New Zealand, is advertising herself as an "Equestrian trainer" and describing her qualifications as BHSAI, a degree in horse psychology and business studies, having worked to help Jane Bredin-Gregory and having worked to help the Whittaker brothers and having trained her horse to prix st george standard! All this I have to say is a complete fantasy and pack of lies as she has only ever owned 2 horses and I of the was a very elderly cob pony. Any one got any ideas of how to tackle this??
 
I wouldn't worry - the equine world is a very small place and people will figure it out for themselves.

TBH, I'm from Australia and over in our neck of the woods, qualifications like BHSAI don't really mean that much. People are far more likely to go to trainers that are unqualified, but have a sound track record of performance.

ETA if you are that worried contact the NZ equivalent of trading standards I guess - if she is using it in actual advertisments for her services then its false advertising?
 
id probably just have said something to them like "why would you make these things up? if people find out youre going to look exceedingly silly" rather than posting about it on a forum which they may infact come across..
 
I'm sure she won't get far with it.

If someone gives her a job and she does it badly, well she most likely wont be able to get another as people talk.

Are you the relative she is speaking of? :confused: I am really struggling to see why you are so upset about it otherwise. :o

There are lots of threads on here created by people who have seen things advertised online and shared them so others on here can comment ie rip them to shreds. One recent case being a picture of an overweight pony for sale but there are many others. Isn't this just the same thing, someone is lying about their qualifications and experience and she is letting us know about it.

I'm not having a go at anyone, I am just really surprised at how annoyed you are about it.
 
I actually don't see what the OP is doing wrong here. She is quite obviously asking advice. She is asking what she should do about someone who is blatantly lying to get work.
If this was any other profession.... A doctor making up qualifications to get a job in a hospital, a secretary saying they had been a PA to Richard Branson, a financial advisor who had no qualifications there would be lots of advice on how to stop them, but because its the horse world there seems to be this 'keep your nose out' attitude.

I'm surprised to some of the responses here. It seems ok on this forum to rip apart an advert that is posted elsewhere with 'I feel sick, I feel like contacting the seller to give them a piece of my mind' which is gleefully jumped on & agreed with but a genuine query gets treated with ridicule!

I certainly wouldn't want to think I'd paid good money for a lesson with a trainer based on their experience & find out it was all made up! What if they did something dangerous?

OP as this person is a relative I'd probably contact them first, I'd leave it open & not full of accusations. I.e
'I don't know if you know but it's going around that you're saying you've got X qualifications & worked at x & x.
If I were you I'd have to do my best to quash these rumours I'd hate to think what will happen when it gets out that their not true'
 
People who exaggerate their abilities are easily found out! So too will your relative.
I have been around long enough to see kids riding in basket saddles now taking their own out. So I was extremely surprised when a name from the past was being advertised as having done all sorts as a junior show jumping champion, worked abroad teaching and assisting high level show jumpers to achieve all sorts!!!
From memory her claim to fame was piddling on her saddle during a sedate long hack! Certainly never achieved what was claimed (apart from in her dreams)
 
I thought it would be obvious the difference between someone capable of training a horse to PSG and with the Whittikers and someone who has two elderly mares....
 
Agree that qualifications over here have little relevance - the popular trainers are the ones out doing it - might get some pony club kids maybe if the rates are low enough but its a small community here most people know someone who knows someone :) .

Google is a good place to check if they are as good as they say they are they will be mentioned in something in relation to the riders they claim to have trained.
