Hello all,

As im new to the forum I thought i'd introduce myself out of courtesy :)

Im from South Yorkshire, dont have my own horse at the moment (im working on my hubby ;)) and im just getting back into riding after a ten year gap

I was a little aprehensive at first but seem to have been lucky enough to be able to pick up where I left off.

I look forward to reading your posts and admiring your horsey piccies.

LDDG2009 :D

Welcome to the forum! Do update us if the OH gives in and you get a horse and please post lots of piccies :p! Do you have any dogs or other pets you can show us pics of to amuse us..... or at least me :)

Hello and welcome to the forum. 10 years is a long gap from riding  I hate it if I can't ride for even just a week and all that snow and ice at the end of last year/begining of this year nearly killed me  ;) :p :D Glad to hear you are able to pick up where you left off and are enjoying being back on bord. Good Luck with the hubby hope he gives in soon :D

Snowysadude - Thanks for the welcome! At the minute we have 4 dogs and 4 ferrets (hence one of the reasons OH is a little sceptical over the horse idea - too many responsibilities!) I'll dig out some photo's and post them when I get a minute :)

LauraWheeler - Thanks for the welcome :) it is a long gap! To be honest it was circumstances at the time, I had to give up riding due to work and college commitments, then beer and boys took over! Since I started riding again (about October time) I dont know how I managed without it all this time - I struggle to get through a week now as im literally counting the minutes until my Saturday afternoon lesson. I'll keep pestering him, it may take a while yet but I have been promised 'one day' :)

I'm new too and also from South Yorkshire. I am currently searching for a good riding school as I'm intending to start riding again after a longer gap than 10 years!! (It's about 23 years, I think ).

I just thought I'd introduce myself and say hello and also wish you luck with getting your own horse. I have been working my way through past posts over the last couple of weeks and have been inspired by a few other people on here who have come back to riding after long breaks and one or two starting from scratch at a more mature age. That has made me realise that I'm not the only one mad enough to contemplate taking it up again at my advanced age;).

Hi and welcome :) I too had a long gap.... 8 long years with no horse as i had twins and gave the horses up through lack of time and energy. Got back into it last year and dont know how i went 8 years without. Hope you talk your other half round ;)

your hubby should see our house. We often joke we are going to start a petting zoo. We have 2 dogs, 2 ponies, tropical fish (inclu a shark) , 2 budgies, A snake and we sometimes have my OH's daughters hampster over. I don't think i'm forgetting anyone. I'm currently working on the OH to let me get Degus But at the min we can't afford the set up having just got the snake a bigger tank :p :D :D

Welcome! I too don't own my own horse, and got back in the saddle in June after a 10 year break. I'm now riding better and much more confidently than I did as a teen! How did we all manage without it OP and Lynnskatz?! When you crack your hubby, make sure you share your secrets with us ;0) Well, to be fair, I think if I won the lottery or got a super well paid job, my OH would have no complaints at all about me wanting to buy a horse! lol.

Well what can I say, im not the only one after all! I really appreciate all of the warm welcomes - was wondering if i'd be able to fit in with bein a second round newcomer and not having my own horse at the min but clearly it wont be a problem :)

Vixen Van Debz - my OH is the same really, he has a big interest in animals too so it really is the cash and responsibility thing that I need to win over with him.
I've also found since I started back up that im a much more confident and in turn comfortable rider....I guess this is as a result of being a more confident person in general.

LauraWheeler - you certainly sound like you have your hands full! But im sure you would be lost without them all :)

Lynnskatz - I was quite surprised after my first lesson how achey I was and certainly how much energy it takes! I can imagine it being difficult to juggle hobbies with looking after young twins!

Rosy - from one newbie to another welcome :) Where abouts in South Yorkshire are you if you dont mind me asking? I'm in Rotherham.

I'm in Darton on the outskirts of Barnsley very near to the boundary with West Yorkshire. I don't really know Rotherham at all, I'm afraid.

You sound as if you have your hands full already with all your animals. We have a dog and four cats and my husband has put a ban on any more animals - I tend to accidentally 'acquire' cats. :D

Really nice to 'meet' you and good luck with all your horsey plans.

It's very reassuring to read that you are more confident and feel as if you ride better now you are older. This is the main thing worrying me as I am thinking of taking the plunge so I hope that I have a similar experience.

Good luck with winning the lottery:D

Thanks Rosy!

I think my confidence has been boosted also by the instructor at the stables I started back at being very understanding and pointing out all the goods and bads, giving me something to work on but without being all negative.

Good luck with getting yourself back in the saddle....go for it it's definetly worth it (I reckon!)

Welcome aboard to all the newbies :D

I had a longer break ( I think ) than most of you of around 20 years  I got back into it by sharing Ellie a Sec D about 4 years ago :) In at the deep end maybe but I had loads of fun with her and she taught me loads. Sadly she went to the great field in the sky just after Christmas :(

Nearly 2 years ago I met and fell in love with a Sec D x Trad Cob filly that had just been weaned and had attitude to burn :p Shortly after that I bought her and am hoping to back the baggage at the end of the summer. If she is ready of course :D Have been having lessons at my local RS and having loads of fun and learning more each week :D

Recently started loaning Ebony who is a Sec D x TB  Anyone notice the theme here :p :D

OP I hope you manage to win your hubby round and you get your own horse

Do you have a soft spot for section d's by any chance Ellies_mum2?!?!? :)

Sharing/Part loan is another option that I may soon begin investigating (and accidentally on purpose begin leaving 'info' around the house on :) ) It may well be the stop gap I need until i'm in a position to be able to fully commit to owning one of my own! It would also help me gain experience on the ownership side of things I suppose....I have plenty of yard experience but no experience of owning/being responsible for one particular individual over a longer term than a week.

Once again - thanks all for the replies and welcomes!

Just a little one :p

Sharing/part loan is a good idea I think. It will certainly help you gain experience which is always a good thing :) Sharing Ellie taught me I prefer shavings to straw to muck out :p Amongst other things of course ;)

:)

I used to have a part time job at a local stable yard so I am used to all the mucking out side of things, I think the things i'd have to pick up/learn would be about feeding (as this wasnt something I was really involved in other than following a list of Ruby has one scoop of X, Y, Z and Rupert has 2 scoops of A,B,C if you know what I mean) and also about shoeing and first aid as these were things that others more senior to me would have dealt with.

Don't just think about taking the plunge Rosy - do it! It's the best thing I've done in my life for years 80) It's all about the right school and instructor for me too though, but they are out there and HHO is a great place to ask for reviews of your local centres 80) I recommend starting a thread with your local area in the title, so people that could help and see it clearly.
