Newbie and a problem!

Hello everyone

I'm new here, got a lovely chestnut 16hh Irish draught x on loan and is 23 years young!

Problem - was on holiday for 2 weeks and he had colic while I was away, he was in safe hands and vet was there in 25 mins! Came through it and didn't need surgery but got displaced colon and vet found a lump in it?
Just really wanting some advice and what to expect really.
Friend at yard said he wasn't quite right again tonight so sat with him for while and he picked up again. Just quite worried because he's and older chap!

Sorry for short intro and hitting all with a problem!
 
Hi - welcome to HHO.

As he is a loan horse, have you spoken to his owner? This may be something they have dealt with before. If you are worried that he may colic tonight can you get the vet up to check?
 
It's abit complicated but owner lives away far away and is not back for a week yet for summer visit, so he's my responsibility for the six months owners away.
My friend left yard at 8.30 tonight and said he was picking up again.

Just worried for him :(
 
So, youve spoken to the vet? And why was your friend doing the horse this evening and not you? Did they contact you to say he was not quite right? Have you now seen the horse youself tonight??
 
I trust her 100% and is a really close friend of owner and is very experienced and knowledgable about horses. More than me anyways!
Should of said earlier but owner is aware of situation she emailed me about the whole thing.
Never dealt with colic before as its my second loan and only had him a year.

Not really sure what else you want us to say! :confused:

Either you are happy and confident that the horse is OK or you are not. If the horse is OK then you don't need to do anything, if he is not 100% you need to speak to the owner and vet

Just back from America so haven't been to yard yet as I'm half hour drive away and also she is still looking after him today due to jetlag until tomorrow when I'm
Back at yard. I saw him yesterday briefly as I picked dog up from kennel and wanted to see him. He looked good actually so wasn't worried but she texted me saying he was quite right but obviously not serious as she would of phoned me and vet!!

Thank you for that. All I wanted was abit of info/advice as never dealt with colic before and he's older so prob over worried.
 
Hi and welcome.

Does anybody live on site e.g. YO? Is it realistic to get someone to check on him during the night, or at least very early in the morning?

It might give you peace of mind and at least if there was any problem it could be dealt with sooner or later.

Yeh my friend who has been taking care of him will be going up Early tomorrow morning, i will be going up at half 7 and will be with him till half 11 when I have to go to work, then my friend will be bringing him in at 4.
 
Update- went to yard this morning to be greeted by a cute blazed chestnut face! He was very happy to see me kept nuzzling in which was nice!
Keen to go to field with a nice spring in his step and being his usual cheeky self. Went into field and had a good trot around.
Can't help but feeling optimistic!
