Hi all :) Been a lurker for years but never posted before!

I own a cob who has had bad quality hoof for a few years now (splitting and cracking) - she is barefoot and I (with the help of my farrier!) have so far been able to manage her hooves up until recently :(

She has previously been fed farriers formula of which has been good - however the past couple of weeks her hoof wall has been splitting and 'peeling' away! Went down this morning and quite a substantial amount of hoof wall has peeled up like a flap on her fronts and backs (about 1.5 - 2 inches up the hoof). I have the farrier coming tomorrow but was wondering if any of you had experienced this and if you could recommend any other supplements i could feed her etc?

I will get some pictures this afternoon when i go back.

Many thanks in advance! All advice is greatly appreciated!!!!

probably should add she is fed haylage and a handful of happy hoof along with her farriers forumla. Has regular daily turnout ( 5 hours per day) she does not hack out on roads. :)

We need to know whether the splitting is between the hoof wall and the laminae, or between the inner and outer hoof wall. As amandaco says, some pictures would help.

In my experience, the first one is usually a carbohydrate issue and the second a mineral balance issue (always recognising that some mineral imbalances can also give you carbohydrate issues!)
