Hello everyone,

I've been a member for quite a while, but only just remmebered.

Today I took my two dogs, Charlie (whippet although more greyhound sized!) and Lola (terrier/lab cross, looks very sausagey in her winter coat) to the football fields for a good run.

There were people playing football so i took them to the park across the road.

However as i got there i noticed the 'dog walkers group' was starting to congregate, and as charlie still has his ''see it and run'' attitude, i tried to keeep him close by. lola follows wherever charlie goes unless she sees i have treats.

So i kept them close by but all their dogs ran towards mine, so i let them go and play. They can get rough but arent aggressive in it, the only time they get aggressive is if one of them gets hurt or feels threatened, which i assume is normal.

Then the leader of the group who i and my mum have met and chatted with before, and who knows my dogs, said 'get lola away shes biting'.
1)she wasnt biting she was playing, it was infact her dogs that were snapping at mine
2) am i being wimpy or is this rude?

she didnt want my dogs to join in with their play, and i thought it was really unfair as thats what the group is for, to allow dogs to socialise and play TOGETHER..

lolas a rescue dog so needs teaching what its like to play with other dogs and charlies a bit of a loner anyway and needs teachiong that everyhting is not to be chased.

Any advioce for next time this happens, short of telling her to pee off?

ETA - they arent misbehaved, just excited to see other dogs because they usually get to play. just realised what i said makes them look like uncontrollable hounds!

Hello and welcome :)

You could tell her that if she knows anything about dogs, she should be able to read body language and tell the difference between an air/warning snap and an actual bite (which are actually fairly uncommon in dog play)
Some people need to realise dogs are dogs, they don't always look or sound pretty, sometimes they play rough, but it's all part of the game, you can't expect them to sit around a table and play tiddlywinks.

If you were near me yours would be welcome to play with my fella :)

Sadly this is why mine don't get to play with other dogs outside of arranged 'playdates' with other dogs of the same breed. They play as if they are killing each other - biting, neck-ragging, bowling each other over, growling and screaming the whole time.

They're actually surprisingly good (given their backgrounds) at moderating their behaviour for non-mental dogs but it sometimes takes the other dog to go 'oi, bugger off, that was too much' before they take it down a notch, by which point the owner is usually screeching about aggressive dogs and biting and whatnot.

It would be so much better if they were just left to sort themselves out but it's rare to find other owners on the same wavelength and the places in which it's safe to let dogs do this without potentially intimidating and inconveniencing other people, as in a park situation, are few and far between. So mine stay on leads and wait until their mates down the road are free for a walk. :)

CaveCanem - thankyou for that, its really cheered me up, its just silly, lolas only ever bitten another dog once and thats because it lunged for her and she couldnt run anywhere because she was up against a fence. i might use that tiddlywinks thing haha

Also to the other poster (sorry i cant see your name now!)thats exactly how charlie and lola play! its quite obvious its only playing because why would they run off together wagging their tails?

eurgh i just dont like people like that its quite obvious she only wants her mates there, super clicky. and as i walked past a couple before i got told to b****r off and they said
'oh whose are these', 'i think theyre that girls that was over there' and then she just went 'ohwell then' and turned round.

i was like, its quite obvious they just want a pat on the head but cause im not part of your clique you cant touch them.. and one of their dogs ran off with my ball!

There are two dogs in this picture. Mine is the thug on top :p

Lol, BC that a cool picci:D
To the OP......It would pee me off more that this woman thinks she controls not only her "walking group" but you, your dogs and the space you walk in. I would have told her to "do one" and call her dogs away if she was so concerned her darling was being treat badly:p I think maybe I just look like I have a bad attitude:o:D, cos I get none of this idiocy when out and about, either that or my dogs who play in a 10 strong pack mind their own business, but will allow any wonderer into their group for play, but maybe look manacing enough to keep folk at bay with their dogs:p I wonder if its the rotti, the akita or the brick out house bully lurcher that scares folk away:D:D, OR me:rolleyes::p

We met up with a gentleman that walks the same fields tonight and all together there was 14 dogs playing together:D:D
