Newbie: Rugging after exercise

Hi everyone, we've had our first pony about 6 months now. Not really horsey people prior to this other than my daughter riding for 6 years at a riding school.

We're getting out and about to shows now (mainly showjumping) and pretty much ever time it's rained! Yesterday we attended a clinic and the instructor said to go rug up when finished. So I've googled this and see it has to do with the horses muscles. But what rug and/or boots to we put on if they are soaked?

Sorry if a silly question, there are so many rugs out there and finding it difficult to find info on rugging wet horses!

If appropriate sponge off sweat, use sweat scraper to get worse if the wet off, pop on a thermatex on (other brands of similar type exist, but I prefer thermatex). This is what I do with a wet or sweaty horse.

and walk in hand for 20mins, the pony should be cooled down, if left hot , it may break out in a sweat.
If pony is very hot and sweating you can wash off with water as long as you make sure it is dry when you put it in stable.

You need a wicking rug most are fleece or thermatex as mentioned as they dry the horse off but allow air to circulate and keep them warm so they don't get a chill while cooling down.
 
If at a show, I'd be inclined to put a fleece rug on after initially walking the necessar & sponging if necessary (assuming you've travelled there) & then a Thermatex type rug once back home after that.
