At the grand old age of 40 I have just purchased my first horse:D. So far it's been good with a few teething issues but we are getting there. Today I tried to register her with my vet and they said I had to pay £100 for the privelage and for this amount I get absolutely nothing. Is this normal for equine vets? I have had other animals registered with the practise for over 12 years and have always paid my bills on time. I'm really annoyed  but don't want to complain if this is normal .Sorry for moan on my first post.

Never had to do that with any of mine. In saying that though I have been with my vets practice for years so things may be different these days.

I've never heard of having to pay to register your horse with a vet!! I'd be going elsewhere!
Congratulations on your new horse :)

I am exactly the same as you. I have just registered my boy and it was free. However, my vet does free call out on monday which i do not qualify for on the first visit.

I've never heard of such a thing, particularly as you are an existing client. Most veterinary practices are looking for work, and trying to find ways to bond clients to them, not driving them away. Crazy.

Thanks everyone for your replies . Didn't think this would be the norm. Will start looking for another equine vet tomorrow. Any body recommend good vet near Stirling ?

Don't know who you tried but I am with Clyde in Lanark and when I went to register the wee guy with them 5 years ago it was 70 quid which was credited to my account. The justification was that they had been "victim" to people running up general maintenance-type bills and then doing disappearing acts. I believe that Struthers and Scott are up your way somewhere and spoken of highly in my experience.

I know of a vet who does this and seeing where you are I think it's the same one! A lady at my yard registered there recently, I thought the amount was to be taken off the first bill?
