Hi guys
I am new on here so i would just like to introduce myself, My name is Yvonne,I am english, but now living in spain, I have 3 boys, 3 cats, a dog, 13 tortoise and a Grey spanish horse called Gina.
I am need of a little help, She is 12 years old and was used as a constant broodmare until she had complications with her last foal, which meant she was to expensive to keep so she was sent to the slaughter house, where i found her and bought her, I know i shouldnt have, but i fell in love with her.
She is very good natured, but stubborn, What she will do occasionally is when i get on her she drops down and lies on her side, I try to kick her forward but dont always get the chance, I have had her 2 months and she has done this 4 times which i suppose is not too bad,(not sure):(.Also she will not stand still while i mount,I have tried teaching her,
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Yvonne and welcome! Am not a hugely regular poster on here more a lurker really lol. Not sure if you have but may be a good idea to get saddle checked, if she has been out of work for ages and only been used as a brood mare her muscles and possibly joints etc may not be that strong - am no expert but think it takes alot out of mares having foals regularly???

Am sure there are others on here who could give more informed advice though. Good luck:)

I don't know what would make her behave like that. However I would get a good horse vet out to give her the once over to make sure she hasn't got any physical problems, as there may other reasons she was sent to slaughter.

Hi and welcome! I am also in Spain, whereabouts are you?

With regards to your mare, how is she kept? My mare has done this to me ONCE, and that was when she was temporarily being kept at a typical Spanish livery yard with no turnout, so really just wanted to roll. Now, she is at home, living out 24/7 and has never done it since. Does she get any turnout? If so, then as others have suggested, I would get her back/joints checked. I know a couple of back people in Costa Blanca/Murcia area if that is any help to you. PM me if you don't want to say exactly where you are.

Thanks guys. Becca, Im in Torrevieja
.
I did have her checked by a vet as soon as she was bought and also had blood tests done, for liver, kidneys etc.
All came back as fine and the vet said she is okay.
It seems to be more of a behavioral problem as she will only do it if she really doesnt want to work. Once you have her moving she loves it and stands very proud.
She is very head strong and she does try to be the boss.
I go up 6 days a week, so that she has always got some exercise,
I will lunge her for 30 mins, then let her loose to roll or whatever she wants to do. When im not lungeing i am riding which would be about 3 times a week, I do try and lunge her for 10 mins with a loose girth before riding.

Ah you're not far from me then - I'm in Elche.

If she has been checked, it does sound like it may be behavioural. How long have you had her? She could be testing you to see how much she can get away with maybe? Can you anticipate when she is about to do it and use your leg/voice to get her moving again? Other possibility would be her saddle pinching perhaps. Do you ride English or Vaquera? I personally don't like the Vaquera saddles, I think they are very bulky, poorly fitting and uncomfortable, but that is just IMO. It could be hurting her though, especially if she has been out of work for a while as a broodmare and is poorly muscled.

Sounds silly but are you sure she has never been circus trainned?? I schooled a pony that had been trainned for the circus, and whenever he had had enough he would just lie down!! Took a LONG time for him to forget it!!
Q

Dont think she ws ciecus trained, although i am thinking about doing artistic with her as she does a fantastic fainting act..LOL
Becca: I ride English and she has done it with 3 different saddles,I ve had her since the 17 of October, I think you might be right and she is trying to see what she can get away with, Most of the time i can feel her about to do it, as its all in slow motion..
